Dont get me wrong, I liked Sophie Rayworth in the morning, and It is doubtless an aspirational job; but 92K P/A as a BBC newsreader/journo?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8045414.stm

Is there a list of salaries for BBC positions? I'm glad I don't pay TV license!

BBC said:
A Labour peer turned on a BBC presenter demanding to know how much she was paid during a live interview on MP expenses.

Lord Foulkes clashed with Carrie Gracie on the BBC News Channel after she asked if MPs who had abused their expenses should pay the money back.

He accused the media of ignoring the good work MPs did and demanded to know how much she was paid.

Told it was £92,000 a year, he said she was being paid "nearly twice as much an MP - to come on and talk nonsense".

He added that BBC presenters such as John Humphrys and Jeremy Paxman were paid hundreds of thousands of pounds "to come on TV and sneer at democracy and undermine democracy. The vast majority of MPs are being undermined by you."

Lord Foulkes was appearing on the BBC News channel to defend Commons Speaker Michael Martin's role in the ongoing row about MPs' expenses.

He said there were "far more important things going on in the world" - but became agitated when Ms Gracie asked why Mr Martin had tried to block the publication of expenses.

"The intention always has been to publish this. Perhaps one of these days you'll do a thing about how much the BBC is being paid. We're paying hundreds of thousands of pounds for presenters who come on three days a week."

Ms Gracie tried to ask another question and apologised for interrupting, prompting the Labour peer to tell her: "You're not at all sorry to interrupt me - every time an MP comes on you constantly harass them. How much are you being paid?"

Lord Foulkes, a former Scotland Office minster, is the only member of the House of Lords to also sit in the Scottish Parliament. He stood down as an MP in 2005.

John Humphrys and Jeremy Paxman worth every penny and more. To listen to them deconstruct political rubbish, from whatever party is a joy. As is watching CH4 news when Jon Snow presents. Paying large amounts of money to someone to read the autocue is wrong. When CH5 paid a million pounds to Kaplinski to show how, less than bright, she is, we saw the US like beauty parade that news has become. It will only get worse. As to the numpty who was being interviewed, he reminded me of a school boy who was blaming the teachers for his poor exam results. " If you didn't talk about this no one would know" was the heart of his pathetic appearance.

I am a little surprised it's that high - don't get me wrong I know the Fiona Bruce's and the likes get paid megabucks but I always assumed the fairly anonymous army of News 24 and Sky News newsreaders got much less, I'm plucking a figure out the air here but I'd have guessed £50k or so.

Unfortunately for the BBC, they pay expenses too. So the flat salary might be £92k, but on top of that you need to add the clothing allowance, the free clothes and outfits and the free taxis from location to location. It might not add up to that much in comparison with the MP's, but it still runs to thousands of pounds per year and it is a little rich for someone to benefits from the advantages to criticise another.

She was smart enough to realise that if she didn't admit it, then someone would immediate scurry about and find out via FOI or whatever.

At least if a newsreader takes the piss with expenses then they'll get fired. Pity politicians don't get treated the same.

There is a difference between market rates and expence fraud.

Simple reply to the question would have been 'I am not an elected official'.

This!

Yes lets tackle Stupid pay at the BBC but this story isnt about newsreaders on nearly 100k.

Its about plebs like us who work hard all day pay our taxes, do as we are told and follow the rules made by our MP's while they take the piss and avoid paying them.

This thread is exactly what that tt Foulkes wanted - people to get distracted from the fking disgraceful behaviour that the MPs have been getting away with for years.

The BBC argument is one for another day. These bds need to pay money back and soon, not seek to redirect public eyes

Think this whole thing is a convenient distraction. People dont seem to be talking about how bad they are at their jobs and how we are £150 billion in debt.....just how much the MP's are taking the piss.....lets get back to how bad they are at their jobs and sack them for that!

I suppose the difference is that ITN and Sky are commercial enterprise who earn their own money...

yes Indeed, last time I checked I wasn't paying the news readers' taxes, I have however paid what appears to be over the odds on MPs salaries. Still, I've spent the last few hours looking at some data regarding MPs' Expenses and to be honest if I've got my sums right, non of the PH massive are going to be very happy. Still, the work is out for review at the moment so if I've got it right you'll all be the first to hear.

Did you notice when George Osborne was being grilled on R4 about the £400 cab ride that he is now paying back he made constant reference to the BBC regularly sending car and driver to take him on long journeys at their expense?

When this is over the BBC needs dealing with. If we think MP's are a waste of our money how about Chris Moyles at £650k a year or Jonathan Ross or..........

Point being is like it or not they have talent, and could find gainful employment elsewhere at an equivalent salary. MP's are, shall we say, a different kettle of useless fish.

Anyway, is 92k really that much? That's a contractor salary that is, for burying your head in a PC all day long.

I doubt very much that any commercial radio station would pay Moyles £650k a year.
