I think I've got a plan which will satisfy the great British electorate whilst at the same time allowing Gordon Brown to save face. (I know; I'm all heart)

While GB knows that things don't look good for the future of a Labour government, this expenses fiasco shows Westminster to be rotten to the core; right across the political spectrum.

So here's the plan: all MPs have their expenses published and then GB calls a general election on the basis of it being an appropriate time for the electorate in every constituency to review and decide if their incumbent MP has noshed a little too deep into the gravy train.

GB gets to call an election from the perspective of putting his (and his predecessor's) performance into the background (of course, I'm not so naive to not realise that it will be dealt with during the election campaigns) and the public, for once, get to do something useful at the ballot box; namely, humiliate the engorged pigs who have taken us all for a ride over the last few years.

Good idea?

They won't do that because they know full well that most of their ministers would no longer be MPs when people see how much they are claiming whilst the man in the street (i.e. the Labour Party's "person") struggles. A lot of Labour MPs are not exactly in huge majorities....

They won't do it because the leaders of every party will be queuing at GB's door begging him not to do something which will decimate half of all of their 'front benches'.

Doesn't mean it's not the right thing to do.

And given the haemorrhaging the Labour contingent are going to get anyway, might it not be a canny move on GB's part to cause some serious misery to the other parties too?

Of course, what would happen is that the greedy MPs would be deselected by their parties before the election lists were made up.

And how often do voters really consider the individual standing in their constituency?

For the vast majority, it's the Party they stand for rather than whether they'll be a good constituency parliamentarian that counts.

If only that were true. They've been at it for years.
