Hazel Blears; Winky's biggest threat?
Discussion
Last night's QT got me thinking about Hazel Blears.
In all honesty, I'd sort of forgotten about her.
I now think that she is the biggest threat both to Winky and to Davey boy. Seriously, and it pains me to say this about any leftie, I quite like her; she has intelligent eyes that sparkle unlike the rest of the "2 brain cell club" in gov't.
As a woman, a fiesty woman, she may just be able to bring Labour back on track given the opportunity. She is more influential than we think, chairing a large Labour internal group.
With strong working class roots to boot, I am worried about her more than any of the other numbnuts in cabinet.
Of course, the biggest issue facing Hazel or any other kings in waiting, is healing the party's fractures. Whether anyone can do that is the single biggest challenge Labour has ever faced.
Anyone agree with me?

I usualy do but only partialy this time.
The Labour party is sunk - the recent boldness of the press has happened as Brown has had his grip loosened around their necks. As soon as he goes completely, the floodgates will open and it will be open season on the party. They only really have one tabloid (which is what the general unwashed read) that is backing Labour with the rest either neutral or openly Tory.
I can't see any of the front bench having the power or personality to overcome the press and the press are intent on showing the lack of unity, confusion and general fukwittery of the Labour Party. Also, her response to her expense claims show that she's as arrogant and aloof as the rest of them.
So, to agree with you on your first point - she could be the next party leader. A threat to CMD? No.

You know how they say you should never talk to people about politics; well, it seems that is no longer the case. Everywhere I go, people are chit-chatting away. What strikes me, and continues to absolutely and utterly terrify me is the hordes of NL apologists.
I used to think that given enough time, even these folks would come to realise the dangers of Socialist governments. I'm just not so sure any more.
My sample is young, old, rich, poor, illeducated and otherwise.
I just worry that only a simple change of leader will be enough to secure the votes of the aforementioned and their ilk....which is a lot of people.
Another concern is that the Far-right will nick a fair few votes from the elderly and the disenfranchised, not only from Labour, but from the Tories too. For instance, my local Tory HQ is staffed full of permapermed OAPs; even activists like these ladies aren't really too keen on CMD, merely they are towing the party line, obviously.
Overconfidence breeds vulnerability. I am paranoid. Guilty as charged.

There would have to be a GE and with that a change of Government.
My hope is for CMD to get in and then step aside realtively soonish for Hague.

As I said above, I'm just a little paranoid really.
It was my visit for a meeting about the upcoming euros, as I mentioned earlier, at my local Tory branch that set my internal alarm bells ringing.
Everyone seemed a little too complacent for my liking, frankly.
I wanted major campaigning, despite our seats being historically safe. I was even willing to pay for a large portion of it. Nobody seemed all that bothered.
Bewilderment ensued........I even considered financing an independant or two, just to shake them out off their perch. (I think we'd win a seat easily to be honest).

In order for the Tories to win 6% of voters need to switch allegiance from Labour to them. The other 30% of voters who backed Labour at the last election will still vote Labour, as they always have.
A year is a long time in politics though. We only need to see some upturn in the economy (or something that can be spun such) and a new Labour leader "wiping the slate clean" to win back some support. What has struck me recently is that the governmental issues at the front of "the people's" heads seem to be expenses and Gurkhas. The basket case economy seems to have drifted away somewhat.
I guess my point is really that we must exercise caution and not get too carried away only to get caught out by some unexpected events.

I wouldnt worry, squirrel nutkin is hardly the sharpest tool in the box. If Labour are stupid enough to appoint her as leader we have nothing to fear.In all honesty, I'd sort of forgotten about her.

She's no more a threat to Winky than anyone else in the party, until the next election. No Labour politician with half a brain will want to lead the party to an inevitable election defeat (especially considering that it would be very likely a change of Prime Minister would require an election sooner rather than later).
In fact, my money would be on playing long and letting the party finances improve and the infighting that WILL happen finish. Otherwise you're in the same position as any number of Opposition Labour/Conservative MPs of the past 30 years.
Either way, if they're Labour, f*ck 'em. I wouldn't cross the street to piss on them, whether they're on fire or not.
