Just seen this on BBC Points West, still looking for the online news link but:

A group of campaigners from the South West campaigning against Global Warming in a Carbon Neutral boat have failed miserably (capsized 3 time) on there trip to greenland and have had to be rescued by an oil Tanker.

Oh the irony, the sweet sweet irony.

Now that they owe their lives to the black stuff will they shut-up? Doubt it.

Can only find this link:

I love the fact that the oil tanker had to 'divert' to pic them up! So their little Carbon Neutral adventure caused a 113,000ton tanker to sail of course and burn tons and tons more fuel to pic them up. wkers.

After reading this little bit I am starting to believe in 'devine intervention':

"In one incident Mr Stoddart hit his head and the wind generator and solar panels were ripped from the yacht"

Classic!

If I were the captain I'd lock them up so they can't sabotage the ship. Also they should have sacraficed themselves for their cause if they believe in it so much. The reduction in demand for resources would be a helpful contribution to their cause also.

From the pictures, it doesn't exactly look that stormy...

Bit of a non-story really.

A yacht aims to sail the ocean on 'wind, man and solar power'??? That is what all yachts already do!

Auxiliary engines are normally only used for getting into and out of marinas!

We are talking gallons to the mile, and not vice versa....

IIRC we are talking 130 litres per hour....

I think it's more a story that these eco-numpties had there lives saved by what they consider to be the ultimate evil.

Greenies: Mayday, Mayday, we are the Fleur bound for Greenland and we are sinking. Request assistance

Captain: Oh, not sure. That's a long way.

Greenies: What? We need help

Captain: I'd love to, really I would, but think of the emissions

Greenies: Listen Pal, you don't want to know about my emissions right about now - Help us for god's sake

Captain: But it will mean burning thousands of gallons of oil - Think of the environment.

Greenies: So fking what?

Captain: What about the Polar bears?

Greenies: fk 'em. Come and get us and I'll buy you a pair of Polar Bear mittens.

Fully loaded no more than a couple of inches I would imagine.

Even more amusing for me then to be honest.

I hope the tanker has sufficient supplies of Muesli to help nurse them back to health

A tanker of that size would roughly burn about 30mt a day (conservative estimate) condidering price is at $300 per ton of fuel for the tanker thats a large amount let alone all the other extra costs involved!

Hmmm, no idea what the fuel consuption would be - I know a really big supertanker can burn 200mT/day, if it were cruising at 20kts it works out to about 10 metres per gallon!
