I saw on the news today that ID cards are being rolled out in Manchester soon - so that's money well spent.

Anyway, the ID cards will not be compulsory so were I to decide to become a terrorist I would choose not to buy one. As such, the foundational argument for ID cards is, I think, rather a little shakey. Also, were I to become a terrorist and elect to buy an ID card, I don't think that the card would say that I'm a terrorist.

Or it's quite possible that I've missed something on this particular 'war on terror'.

No, your right, they wont be compulsory.

You'll just need them to buy petrol, alcohol, cigarettes, cigarette papers, or any other age restricted product/service as well as to access banking services and a whole host of other things.

Is this not just to start the DNA collection before the Conservatives can the project some time in 2010? Even a partial database would be valuable...

Doesn't matter to terrorists, they'll just carry valid ID cards.

In other words, only a terrorist wouldn't have one so you can shoot anyone who isn't carrying their card in the back of the head?

Best just shoot all refuseniks. Or better yet mass gassings? Its got to be a cheaper way.

Don't forget folks the contract to make all these luvly ID cards has been won by a French company. Not that's a bad thing, I mean it's not like we need the business at the moment.

Not to mention the data entry will be shipped offshore. Just look at the fun HSBC had with their indian operations selling customer information out of the back door.

You queue next to the people collecting their "bone-idleness is a disability benefit" who will receive theirs free, of course.

How doesthat even work FFS!

They tell us these ID cards will protect us and save the country from Terrorists..........but they want us to pay £60 quick for one!!!!! Talk about holding us to ransom lol!

Another money generating scheme with no other benefits. Bet you they need to be updated every couple years at more expense!!

Of course, as you have noticed, the "terrorist" argument is bks.
Any terrorist act carried out in Britain in the last 30 years and probably the next 30 has been carried out by somebody who would be entitled to an I.D. card.
Any foreigner coming here to commit an act wouldn't need one. This applies whether they are voluntary or compulsory.

Just more Nu Labia control freakery in action.

This is not about catching anyone, it's about watching you. A suicide bomber isn't going to give a flying fk if he has to present his ID before pressing the button.

Lets be honest it's really rather overkill if its purpose is to stop things like the tube bombings and Glasgow airport. Two incidents and the government are ready to spend billions and catalogue the whole nation? Nah something else is behind it.

Remember though when it was first touted it WAS about stopping terrorists then when the above argument was presented we were told it was about preventing fraud. That argument failed and now they are trying the "well it will be helpful if you need to get a bank loan because they ask for 2 items of ID so now you will just have one, great isn't it?" route.

Not compulsory now, in 5 years though they will be. I'll be voting tory in the next GE but to think they will really scrap ID cards like they claim is pretty niave isnt it. WHat government, regardless of politics would willingly get rid of a database of its populations DNA etc?

Anyone not getting a card will be portrayed as a terrorist in a "...Look at him, he's not got an ID card, whats does he have to hide..." angle. The population of this country are so unbearably stupid that they will agree with that line of propaganda.

ID cards are not required, they are the product of the criminal gang in government and in whitehall. I'm sick of the propoganda on the BBC too, interviewing members of the security services public telling us they want ID cars and that its 'dangerous out there' or 'you dont know who your talking too' as was witnessed on the bbc this morning. Sickening to the extreme.
