.....and then released!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8030541.st...

'The 19 pirate suspects were released because they had not attacked Portuguese property or citizens.'

WTF? They should have set them adrift in their boarding craft, then used the RPGs and high explosive for a bit of target practice.

Surely NATO should have some kind of protocol where any captured piartes are arrested and taken somewhere to be detailed?!

I'm more of a turtle wax man myself hehe

Clearly nobody reads this section of the forum, I was hoping for some interesting things to do with 19 pirates frown

On a serious note though, what's the point of having a multi-national force trying to prevent piracy if they can only detain pirates caught attacking ships of their own nationality?

If they held the pirates they would be able to claim asylum, of course "nobody has any room" for them so where would they end up...?

No they wouldn't. They have committed a crime on the open seas.

It looks like the problem is that they have to be picked up by the right force in the first place. Eg, you kidnap a yank, then its the yanks who have to pick you up to prosecute and so forth.

Personally, I'd return them to a leaky boat that is missing a motor. "there you go boys, 15 holes in the boat, no engine, and 350 miles for land".

That's the problem, there's no point having loads of battleships there if they just release pirates because they attacked a boat of a different nationality. Those pirates will be heading back to Somalia to pick up some more weapons, then off for a bit more piracy within weeks. Doesn't Saint Barack O'Bama of County Mayo want to shut Guantanamo Bay now? I think we've just found a use for it....
