The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has demanded £40,000 compensation from a 17-year-old girl who admitted attacking a branch during G20 protests in London.

The girl, who cannot be named, admitted burglary and criminal damage when protesters targeted the Threadneedle Street branch of the RBS on 1 April.

Prosecution counsel told West London Youth Court the bank wanted to recover the losses incurred during the protest.

The girl, who lives in Brighton, was given an eight-month referral order.

As part of her sentence she may be asked to pay a smaller sum of compensation to RBS.

RBS have gone for compensation in the sum of £40,000 - in my view, this is wholly unjustified

Miranda Ching, defence counsel
Prosecutor Ann Crighton said three plate glass windows were broken and several pieces of computer hardware, which cost an estimated £40,000, were stolen.

Police saw the girl smashing a computer monitor with a keyboard and flinging the keyboard against a window, breaking it.

Mrs Crighton said: "She admits breaking through the police cordon and said she had done so to rescue some of her friends who had been contained in a police 'kettle'.

"At the time she got caught up in the heat of the moment. She thought it would be a good idea to go into the [bank's] foyer.

"When she got inside she thought it would be a better idea to smash up the computer.

"She said she changed her mind and tried to throw the computer through the window instead.

"She was seen picking up a keyboard and smashing a window," Mrs Crighton said.

'Other people'

Defence solicitor, Miranda Ching, said that the girl, who was born in Scotland, was unemployed and lived on handouts from friends and family.

"RBS have gone for compensation in the sum of £40,000. In my view, this is wholly unjustified.

"It may well be that a substantial amount of criminal damage was caused as a whole by other people on 1 April.

"We must look at what my client is charged with and that is IT equipment.

"That seems to be, at most, one computer keyboard and one computer monitor," she said.

The court heard that the teenager, who was introduced to political activism by her stepfather at an early age, had participated in a series of protests across Britain.

The court also ordered her to write a letter of apology and sign an agreement not to commit further crimes.

She's a 17 yr old girl. And RBS p1ss that amount of money away in a second.

No excusing her, but this is a bit silly.

i just love the sarcasm in the lawyers tone

"She said she changed her mind and tried to throw the computer through the window instead".

Well there's a shock, she's long term unemployed.

Maybe if she got off her arse and started contributing to society instead of travelling the country being outraged (at what, seeming she doesn't pay any tax I don't know?), she'd gain a bit more credibility.

Is that possible at the age of 17?

Yes. Bet she's never done a THING to earn a penny in her entire life. She'd make a good Union rep, I suppose.

Personally I think the stupid bh should be deported or shot. Both would be nice, I don't care in which order.

Never thought I'd feel sympathetic towards RBS. She did £40K damage shows owes£40K.

The Defence baloney sounds like a fiction invented to fit indisputable facts....

Sounds like a brain washed 'Class war' type to me. Probably turn out to be a daughter some lefty middle class, chip on shoulder, we don't believe in discipline parents or step parents type rather than underclass. 17 year, long term unemployed, I think long term unemployed is defined by HMG as over 6mths, she's actually not a old enough to sign on, so this is more of a prediction than a accurate description.

The irony of someone who has only ever contributed a smidgen of VAT to the state, which has been originally paid out of benefits anyway, is splendid.

Make her work as a cleaner at RBS until the 40k is paid back - about time the punishment fitted the crime again.

I do think it is good that she is being made to pay for her actions - people like this need to be made to take responsibility for destroying others' property - whether RBS' or Mrs Miggins' big bad 4x4 they took a disliking to.

I'm not sure how she would actually pay if she is out of work, and it sounds like the family might be too. £5 a week for years? RBS probably doesn't care - it is the principal at stake here.

I note that "Prosecution counsel told West London Youth Court the bank wanted to recover the losses incurred during the protest."

Well that's fine. In return can we taxpayers recover the £25billion losses RBS has incurred during their decade of gross incompetence? Fair's fair.

Smiler.

So if a company is doing really well, say for example Apple then it is ok for me to go into the Apple store and help myself to a Macbook Pro?

It is not the amount but the principle of a soap dodger trashing the place and not getting away with it.

Quite simply, she should make good. Not sure a keyboard and monitor could really be £40k, but she should definitely pay for the damage that she caused.

fk all sympathy, here.

She should be made to pay. Simple, just deduct it from her benefits for the next 10 years if necessary.

MAybe then feckeless layabouts who contribute nothing to society will thnk twice before commiting offences and concentrate more on getting a job and not being such a fxcking leach on the rest of us.

It's about time more crims were hit with the true costs of their crimes.
