Gurkha Justice
Discussion
Our leaders have decreed that Gurkhas with 20 years service will be allowed entry to our country.
Gurkha riflemen can serve a maximum of 15 years.
In the meantime our leaders allow a culture of scrounging to devastate our economy.
Makes you proud to be British doesn't it.
Good luck to the Gurkhas, please don't assume our leaders are in any way representative of the British people who salute you all.

This really sums politicians up
One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he
asked about his bill and the barber replies, 'I cannot accept money
from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was
pleased and left the shop.
When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a
'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door..
Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his
bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm
doing community service this week.' The cop is happy and leaves the
shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a 'thank
you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.
Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when
he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept
money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The professor
is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a 'thank
you' card and a dozen different books, such as 'How to Improve
Your Business' and 'Becoming More Successful.'
Then, a Member of Parliament comes in for a haircut , and when he goes
to pay his bill the barber again replies, 'I cannot accept money from
you. I'm doing community service this week.' The Member of Parliament
is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen
Members of Parliament lined up waiting for a free haircut.
And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between
the citizens of our country and the Members of Parliament

I think the government have got to be careful, we don't want half of nepal moving to the UK because a distant relative was a Gurkha.
It wouldn't be anything like that. They fight, and die in your name and for your freedom. How about a little gratitude.
I tell you what why don't we employ the ex ghurkas and their male relatives as our border guards, as anyone serving with them will tell you, for loyalty, bravery, motivation and following orders, you could not want for better comrade backing you up in a fix. They'll stop the flood.
Its disgraceful that they never got the full £ army pension entitlement in the first place either.
So only the Officers, very classless meritocracy of this goverment. Although given the timing, if they'd done more it would have shameless good news spin, but they can't even do that, it would've been better for them to do nothing at all. Another gaffe.

I was watching traffic cops last night. It featured some barely literate cocky Somali scumbag caught twice in 4 days driving without insurance or a licence who subsequently skipped bail and is now at large somewhere and undoubtedly thieving to exist. We let the flotsam and jetsam of the world like this creature in but reject the Gurkhas who have fought for us. It makes me ashamed to be British.
I met a former Gurkah in Hong Kong last year. It's absolutely fking awful the way we have treated those people.
Just by way of contrast, the beacon of tolerance and decency and fair mindedness (!) across the water lets members of the Foreign Legion apply for French citizenship after 3 years, and puts them up in a chateau in Provence when they're retired or injured.
Now quite aside from the basic decency of looking after people who have fought for our country, who is going to get the best volunteers in that situation?
I'd never want to be "fair" to the Labour government, but in the interests of balance, the Tories did sod all about this either and importantly, didn't really consider it much before we handed back Hong Kong.

Slightly off topic. There was a somali in the audience for Question Time last night, and when the boot was going in on the Police, he was the first to stick up for them (with the one bad apple, not the barrel defence), He said our Police were great. which i thought was admirable, and gave it some thought. Given what he will have been used to, as law & order in Somalia...Er, Gurkha officers are British, with the exception of the small minority commissioned from the ranks.
Utterly, utterly disgusting. What on earth makes Woolas think that he and his chums have created such a land of milk and honey that every former Gurkha and his extended famliy will want to live here anyway?
A pledge from Cameron to change this, sharpish, would be a very useful thing.

Atleast the General Population has comeout against the govt decision and stood by the Gurkhas! They will be very happy that the people respect them for their service even if the incompetent representatives of the people dont. Disgraceful decision.
These are the times when the British people, who have over time spread lots of values of freedom and respect around the world, will be ashamed to look at another person in the eye!!
I feel sad not just for the gurkhas but more for the british people for being let down by their own!

While I feel that any Gurkha should be allowed to emigrate to Britain regardless, its not as bleak as it seems. They can settle here if they meet one of the following critiera - so not just serving 20 years.
1. They have three years continuous residence in UK - either during or after their service.
2. They received a bravery award (I think levels 1-3).
3. They have a chronic medical condition which came about through their service.
4. They have family in the UK.
5. They served 20 years or more.
Also, if they have at least two of:
1. Mentioned in dispatches.
2. Awarded a MOD disability pension but no longer disabled.
3. Served for 10 years.
4. Have a campaign medal for active service.
Now its not perfect obviously, but past pressure has helped to make the system fairer and with continued pressure from the public etc., hopefully it'll get better still
