THis morning's news on Radio One - paraphrased:

"..economy worst than first thought. The total revenue generated by business in the first quarter was less than that generated in the last quarter of 2008, as a result of lower high street sales, job losses..."

Well, duh! That is what a contracting economy means, you fknuts!!

You know, when there is a recession it means contracting output, not growth.

Why oh why would they even devote 30 seconds to this 'news'? Or maybe they think the listeners are as fking stupid as Dominic Burn and the rest of Chris Moyle's retarded crew.

Cocks!

So you don't think that the BBC has a responsibility to explain the news in different ways and at different levels across their media portfolio?

I'm no beeb-apologist, but I'd say that explaining things differently on Radio 1 and Newsnight is probably the right thing to do. Too many people are disaffected and removed from what's going on in the country as it is.

I entirely agree. The BBC should communicate with all levels of society in accessible ways. If not, it is failing in its remit.

But isn't that the problem? We've dumbed everything down to the lowest denominator?

Both mainstream media channels (BBC/Sky) seem to be aimed at barely illiterate chimpanzees (or the Labour educated generation).

We really have to get back to the days where intelligence and academia are prized rather than reviled - the coverage of Hawking vs Goody is very telling.

My point is not that we should communicate to all sectors of society. But that this is stating the bleeding obvious, but dressing it up as 'news'.

They could have just said that, for those who don't fully understand the mess we are in, a recession means falling output etc etc.

What they did was 'create' a 'news story' that stated 'it is worse than first thought, as output has dropped...' - this is not news.

I think that you are failing to understand how communication needs to vary for different audiences.

Tell 'em what you're gonna tell 'em; tell 'em; then tell 'em what you just told 'em.

With 24 hour news channels, it's incredible how thin on detail the news actually is. It's all the same simple shallow stuff repeated over and over.

Not dumbed down at all - the missus and I had a mild chortle when a news reporter was shown walking up a hill to demonstrate what an uphill struggle Darling faces! Glad they did, would have been difficult to follow otherwise

You listen to Moyles? You have just excluded yourself from any rational debate on any subject. (just teasing, but honestly what did you expect)

smile

Did they show people dressed in Slackjaw and Slugbrows masks jumping into a skip then disappearing without trace to show what's going to happen in the summer of 2010?

School run - for the kids. I listen to R4 on my own as even radio5 liv is a piss boiler. Victoria Derbyshire and that tt Nicky Campbell are too thick.

I don't think the OP put his opinion across brilliantly, but I agree with the sentiment.

There is far too much dumbing down on the BBC at ALL levels. It's just red top quality journalism paid for by the taxpayer.

No offence, but why don't you make your kids listen to what you want to, rather than what they want to, presumably your doing them a favour by giving them a lift? They'd probably learn more about the world from a short blast of today than anything else.

Actually thats a fair point, it's certainly not the programme it was when i was a small child thinking i was all grown up. nerd
Doesn't seem to suck up to labour that much to me though, more like a vehicle for John Humphrys oversized ego. Theres still some good stuff in there though.

Agreed there are a few items where political neutrality struggles to make an appearance. In motoring terms and from a personal perspective, I've been interviewed on Toady and their drivetime programme PM I think it is, and the afternoon slot was significantly more sympathetic (to the driver's perspective) with fewer nu labian soundbites.
