This has been making the rounds since yesterday. I saw part of the tape. Wild stuff.

I am pretty sure things like this used to be commonplace here in the UK....

...about five hundred years ago.

(Apart from the SUV bit of course.)

And that's our (the West's) allies. It's OK though; the police Chief has investigated and has already closed the case as "nothing". Oh, BTW, the police Chief was the Royal's brother.

This guy has the Saddam sons' invicible attitude. He has been exempt from the rules of life in general for so long that he even flaunted his actions, ordering the cameraman to get better angles, etc. Consequences have never applied to him I suppose. The whole video is supposedly 45 minutes.

Shameful behaviour. These people are supposed to be civilized? Jesus! Makes me sick. Next time he lands in a European capital, I hope they arrest him and charge him with human rights violations. There should be vigilante groups ready to dish out justice to those the law can't or won't touch.

Despicable little scumbag. And shame on any Bush/Obama administration official who does not speak out against this in the strongest terms.

What precisely do they have to do with it compared to the administration officials of any of the other hundreds of countries on the planet?

I am sure that any Western government would condemn it, should they be asked for an opinion, as would most others.

now you know why people dont have a problem protesting here...you cant do that in the middle east..never! the only reason the middle east seems a better place to outsiders is because the people there want to entertain foreigners....But ask those who live there and they will tell you that you make one step out of line and you are fooked if they want to fook you up! its all about Wasta!

I fear that diplomatic immunity will prevail. However, on second thought he is not a member of the government, perhaps that doesn't apply? I think what will likely happen is his family will clip his wings after this embarrasment. Agreed, he is scum.

All members of the UAE immediate royal family enjoy diplomatic passports/immunity. So far it looks like his family is backing him 100%. Unless the US government leans on the Abu Dhabi ruler, it will continue to be the case.

Scum.

The person imprisoned/tortured for the sake of these tapes (not the person being tortured on the tape) was a US citizen. The US government is duty bound to uphold his rights. As the guy with the big stick/deep pockets/protector, the US exercise a LOT of influence over the sheikh of Abu Dhabi or any of the other emirates. Further, the US is the beacon of hope/civilization for these countries, at least that is the hope. It should uphold the ideals by denouncing such atrocious/deplorable behaviour, whether other countries step forward or not. I look to the US government to do the right thing, especially as it would be so easy to do in this case.

Er, WTF are you on about? smile

Can you put that into English and explain the tenuous link you made between the guy being tortured and the Bush & Obama administrations, I fail to see how the either administration's officials are ever going to comment on a youtube video of an unknown arab getting assaulted.

Ah, sorry, I see your confusion now. I read up on this a bit, there's a website dedicated to it and quite a few news/video bits on the web. Not pretty. From those, you get a bit more of the picture, which is presumably missing from whatever the link is at the beginning of this thread.

There is a businessman in Texas who used to deal with the sheik's demented brother (the torturer in this video). This Texas businessman's brother made this videotape (he didn't have a choice). After this torture session was over, the demented torturer guy had a falling out with the two brothers. He imprisoned the one living in Texas, tortured him, threatened him and his family, brought forth trumped-up drug charges, etc., all in a bid to get the videotapes back. He didn't succeed. When the Texas businessman was finally freed (I believe the US embassy had something to do with this), he smuggled the tapes out of Abu Dhabi and put some excerpts up on the web and set about filing charges in US courts. This makes the US gov't involvement a bit less tenuous than other governments'.

It's not an unknown Arab on the tape, btw. The guy is clearly identifiable as the sheik of Abu Dhabi's brother, and the UAE gov't has confirmed this in written statements. The statemts go on on to say that this was "not a pattern of behaviour", which makes it all ok in their book, I guess. Apparently the torture shown on the video is all over $5,000 worth of grain not being delivered.
