Well Winky's done it again, the MP's will now receive a flat payment (no pun intended) just for turning up in Westminster...........do you think HMRC will go for me doing the same thing for turning up at my office every morning?

"The proposed system is based on that in the House of Lords where peers receive about £200 a day for attending Parliament" ahhhhh so it's just the much argued for £30k a year pay rise but with a different spin

£200 per day seems a tad excessive.

Surely a deal could be done with Travel Lodge or other hotels for much less....

I'm pretty sure that whatever they do will just be 'tinkering' with the system and that the same pile of money will be distributed, just in a different way.

Just imagine if they really just stopped the second home allowance. I wonder what %age of MPs would suddenly find themselves facing repossession proceedings? hehe

The beauty of this plan is being a flat rate "allowance" for turning up means no receipts have to be provided or explanation given as to what the money has been spent on. Why is this good? Well if your nose is in the trough to the disgusting extent that many of these self serving career politicians are, all that recent hard work under the freedom of information, and successes in the high court to get these types to provide receipts for their feather bedding, and the outting of the worst offenders will have only a very short life, plus rather than look embarassed, Broon can say, "Look I'm not happy either thats why I have today announced reforms..."

Flat rate Allowance means.. No receipts/no evidence/ no shaming.

There was talk earlier of dispensing with the 2nd home allowance (expenses) if MPs could have a £30K payrise, well the media have seen through that, tapping into, and drawing parallels to the hard times suffered by the electorate. Obviously that idea is definite none runner, especially when the budget is announced tomorrow when the hole and the squeeze will be revealed.

The Lords receive £174 each day for appearing in the Lords or committee in the palace of westminster, the amount believed to be the proposed amount for MP is £200 per day. Hmmm... The Commons sat 165 days in 2007-08. £200 x 165 days = £33,000.00.

Nice. And no annoying freedom of information requests to explain what they've spent the money on.

Oh, they'll turn up to do a day's work though, but it's certain not to include signing in or out anywhere, it'll all be on the trust and the word of Honourable members, how about you turn up Westminster at 9am and leave at 9.30am, pass Go and collect £200.

Classic New Labour, it seems like reform, its briefed as closing loopholes, more accountability, transparency, etc, etc, when in all likelihood its actually worse! Move the goal posts, no accountability, spin, spin the message, and there'll be no evidence!

Bloody hell have you seen the video where Brown announces this latest version of "let us rob you blind in front of your very noses"?

He's clearly insane, what the hell is the "smiling" thing about? It's just cringe-worthy:

Utter genius

And will the torys complain bitterly, I can think of 200 reasons a day that they won't

This really does seem to be classic smoke and mirrors, or all spin.

I doubt very much if any politicians of any party are really motivated to reduce their own incomes.

Would any of us be?

You can see the smile keeps slipping and there's evidently someone stood behind the camera mouthing "SMILE!" at him. I almost can't bear to listen the bullst that comes out of his mouth.

They're a devious bunch of thieves aren't they? Here's a question; why is Brown instigating all these changes now, despite having ordered an inquiry the results of which aren't due until the end of the year (and why so long to investigate?)?

Now they will award themselves £10k a year more without having to show any receipts nor be in any way accountable for it. How the hell are they getting away with these sorts of scams? Where are the media, holding these people to account? I almost don't care who gets in next time around as long as it's not Labour. ANYONE but Labour. furious

I'm still confused as to why HMRC are so hot on expenses I can claim and yet don't appear to be setting the rules for MPs.

That You Tube vid was a tad scary, he isn't normal in any acceptable sense of the word - in the words of my 14 year old step daughter, "He looks a right gay - and what's with that false, forced smile which bare no relation at all to the jumble of words he's uttering...?"

What he has done is essentially give all fellow MP's a £30K per year pay rise, no questions asked - because he's told us all that's what he's planned, that makes it OK?

I am fully up for storming Westminster and kicking the lot of them out - the whole political system needs breaking up and reinventing.

They are scum, each and every one of them.

Gotta say - that's a brilliant summary of what Winky has done. I must admit I had no idea, to the layman it looks like he's on our side. But then I read your post and thought the conniving bd.

What's the betting they get one of their mates to clock them in if they are away on holiday hehe

It is a shame this mob don't make this sort of effort to "solve" the nation's problems as swiftly. How long did it take them to stop their business being dragged through the public domain.

The whole system is corrupt and always will be, this current breed do seem to have got it down to a fine art though.

The only reason for this swift, decisive change is surely MUCH more bad press to come in the future on the subject. When are the rest of the scam claims details released?

Bet the Scottish one is really milking the cash cow too.

Central Govt pay around £80 a night to me if I stay in London overnight, and another £30 to cover lunch, an evening meal, phone calls home, laundry etc. I suspect that if I approached a hotel to buy 150 nights a year I could get it cheaper.

Why are MP's any differnt?

Extremely good point. I too consult in the public sector and (not that I often use it) the overnight subsistance allowance paid by Govt/LA is not £200...

Why would MP's need more than me?

MPs Allowance Debate on BBC parliament, led by harrier harmann, getting ugly already over what they going to even vote on.
