He did confess to it though, and apparently didn't even claim any duress to do so. I feel for the guy, but that kind of reduces my sympathy a lottle.....

No idea but I am sure he will be after some compensation for wrongful imprisonment. (Do the government still pay this BTW?)

Why did he confess? Was it for a more lenient sentence?

Confessed under questioning by plod, then at trial retracted his confession, claiming that it was all due to the fact that he's a 'pathological liar'. A jury of his peers chose not to believe him and hence he got locked away.

If he's innocent, it's very unfortunate all round, but from what I've heard (admittedly I don't have all the facts), it's hardly a miscarriage of justice.

Didn't DNA from the scene prove it wasn't him?

From a news report I heard a few days ago he was given a shorter life sentence, but, based on parole interviews one of the areas of recieving parole is you show remorse for your crime. Because he kept protesting his innocence at the parole interviews they denied him his release.

Yep, according to the DNA evidence, there is absolutely no chance that he did it. Another win for the criminal justice system........................Poor s*d.

BBC News just made a comment though about him being a serial confessor though, so like another poster said above my sympathy for him is slightly diminished.

He confessed and then withdrew it before the trial. There is still the matter of needing evidence to convict someone, after all the Gene Huntesque activites of most Police forces in the 70's, then it's no wonder that the poor sod confessed.

Why didn't the Police know he was a serial "confesor"? I'll bet they did and pushed him anyway.

He confessed to a priest it said this morning.

Just another nut job fitted up by the rossers so that a real killer can go on to commit other crimes.
