Why did he confess? Was it for a more lenient sentence?If he's innocent, it's very unfortunate all round, but from what I've heard (admittedly I don't have all the facts), it's hardly a miscarriage of justice.

He confessed and then withdrew it before the trial. There is still the matter of needing evidence to convict someone, after all the Gene Huntesque activites of most Police forces in the 70's, then it's no wonder that the poor sod confessed.Why didn't the Police know he was a serial "confesor"? I'll bet they did and pushed him anyway.
