Trump Diesel Ban?

It seems the UK would be up st creek if Trump threw his toys out the pram and banned diesel exports.

"Hammered by carbon taxes and other levies, 14 UK refineries have shut down since the 1970s. Five of them have closed since 2000, of which two failed just last year.

That has left the nation with four remaining plants – all of which are also facing hard times. None have the capacity to make up the diesel deficit that a US export ban would cause."

Analysts guess a diesel export ban would immediately put pump prices up to £3 a litre.

UK only has 6 weeks reserves.

Why are UK refineries closing? Imported fuels are tax free while UK refineries pay heavy net zero taxes.

But but but Facebook told me that I should keep a diesel and not move to EV as the government would just turn off my EV and nobody can stop my diesel?

it's probably a rather bigger issue for commercial transport rather than personal tbh.......

I'm far from an expert but surely each barrel of oil pumped out of the ground contains different grades which are then separated into different products

That being the case, the US only had limited storage for diesel which means that they have to stop pumping all oil once the storage is full

So surely it's self defeating ?

Absolutely.

Scaremongering and usual Trump stupidity.

Stocks in the US are low so presumably they will saturate the market (lowering prices for consumers) and store the rest? Presumably the period has been set to coincide with storage limitations. Additionally, the prices are high due to high export demand so regulating that demand will help the US consumer.

As Trump ideas go, as long as you ignore the impact on the US on the global stage, it isn't the worst idea he has had?

really ?

I would suggest that a country being so dependant on others that it can't refine or store a commodity that drives its economy is stupidity

Correct. Trump thinks an export ban will cut USA diesel prices. It might, temporarily, then the oil producers cut production and prices are back up.

It seems successive UK govts have placed no value on energy security. Or other potential issues. For example fertilisers. Vulnerable to supply issues. This report thinks there are 4 choices, none good.

1 Stockpile - too late now as energy prices, and hence fertiliser prices are high. Future maybe?
2 Let market prices prevail - farmers might not plant with sky high prices.
3 Subsidies - recipe for exploitation of the taxpayer
4 Move towards organic systems - changed land use. Reducing use of cereals in animal foods. Feeding humans would need to take priority. Make us eat less meat?

From what i understand, it would lower prices in some parts of the us for a few weeks. But refineries would cut back and then prices would rise.
Not to say what the actions of other countries might be against the US.

Sort of, you are removing demand but keeping supply high. Supply will adjust downwards but the market will become much more competitive and the refiners try to keep trains online to cover fixed costs, and to avoid mothballing costs.

I'm going from the industry analyists, the ones that I watched didn't think much of the idea. It seemed to not do much for prices long term in the US.

Of course there could be other analyists out there that think it's great.

Yes and with the Power Companies having permission to switch off now at liberty I think, it's time to get a nice UPS
