They can't even a agree a trade deal, they've been trying to ratify one for the last ten years

Iirc the tiny Belgian state of Wallonia rejected it back in 2016 and ever since they've been bunfighting over it with only about a third of EU states approving it

EU membership .. never happen

I wish people would stop just putting a blood link in a post. At least list out a few key points here ffs

First world problems when clicking a link (to a website that doesn't require you to subscribe or log in to read it) is a soul-crushing effort...

Great to know that the EU can pull membership options out of their backside when they feel like it.

When circumstances change.

Carney is keen for middle powers to work very much more closely together to try to create some alternative to the "rules based order" that the US is rapidly abandoning.

It makes perfect sense and, funnily enough, with the US going senile and Russia throwing its military weight around, it's focused people's minds. Canada and the EU already have a close trading relationship so in the past the marginal cost of the Belgians complaining about the duty on biscuits wasn't that great. Now the stakes are significantly higher and therefore so is the appetite for cooperation and compromise.

While your correct 10 countries have not yet ratified the treaty it's been in effect since 2017.

Just lazy though (both of us I suppose). It lacks context, just putting a link. Poor forum etiquette

Yep.
However, those who then quote AI at me in a forum need a bigger slap.
As you were.

IMO, Europe will start making more deals with nations like Canada - places such as India, China, even African and South American countries.
People are looking to replace and diversify away from USA.

It doesn't make sense.

Surely Canada has seen what an amazing success Brexit was and won't want to get closer to the EU...

I think the US will get around that by "divide and conquer". You only have to look at the EU and several South American countries to see that the US has a strong fan base.

I doubt Canada will be ceding primacy of legislature to the EU somehow

I'm surprised Swinney and the SNP aren't petitioning the EU for a golden "associate membership card"

They won't have most aspects.

The 9 candidate countires would. We should send them over the economic data / analysis we have. That'll make them change their minds :-D

The trick will be getting this to move forward quickly. Could be transformative for Canada, in a good way.

I think it's as much about the message, the symbolism of it
