Losing the car, isn't directly related to crime committed using the car, is it? Its normally due to "stopped allowance" - ie they are healed, or fit enough to not be eligible for enhanced PIP. I would have thought, even as scumbags/criminals, they are still disabled.

I wonder if this means their PIP entitlement was revoked also?

If they'd been claiming based on a highly mobility reducing physical disability, and the video showed that they didn't have it or it wasn't as bad as they'd claimed, it could have resulted in their PIP being revoked I guess (which would in turn have automatically cancelled their eligibility for the Motability scheme, as you need to be in receipt of the higher rate mobility element of PIP in order to qualify for a Motability lease in the first place).

Very expensive consequences for being a scumbag and not going to the local tip.

Exactly that. There was a great thread on readers cars of a van that had been adapted for hand controls for a wheelchair user. There's no way on earth the 'little blue car' would have worked for him, nor should it.

They both look quite able in the video. Presumably they also had the physical ability to remove what looks like stone or concrete from wherever it came, and load it into the car.

"Still disabled" or not, I'd say that if you abuse the society which is supporting you, then you could reasonably expect that support to stop.

When I was a boy one of the old ladies down my road had an Invacar. Bet they're quite collectable these days, especially since most we recalled and scrapped over safety concerns (funnily enough around the same time as Motability scheme was implemented).

Mobility did indeed replace the Invacar. Mainly because it was an absolute death trap and would never pass safety standards today, or even decades ago Despite that, the DWP had people for years whose sole job it was to try to get people to give up their blue car and get a proper one. . The main point was that you had to have a proper licence to drive a car, and many didn't.

When I was at school a lad in the upper sixth form had one, which he used to drive to school. He wasn't disabled in any way. I recall he had to use a bungee strap to keep the door from flying open when he cornered too fast

I was fascinated to see the Labour Govt come out with basically those disabled should not have nice cars etc so remove the BMW and Merc from the scheme.... I cannot imagine the furore if the Tories or Reform had said such a thing.

But if one day you are unfortunate enough to become disabled, I hope you will continue to hold the above view. After all, don't want those horrid ill people to have anything nice do we?!?!

But the scheme is publicly funded.

Yes, people give up their PIP (maxes out at about £800 a month)

But there's no reason why the scheme should not operate on a cost conscious basis. The dwp recently revised insurance rules to cut costs.

Tbh I know nothing about the scheme- how people choose vehicles, if they have a budget to spend etc.

I recall reading some people saying only bmw offered a x seat car with y and z options... but Idk - is that options they need? Or just want?

I could be convinced, but I think the average man (or woman) in the street would get the general point that a publicly funded scheme should offer value (but adequate) choice, and not offer a luxury or profligate choice.

Whether axing bmw and merc achieved that objective is also another point i am.on the fence about.
