We've been doing that for 20 years. Why haven't the embers died?

No they don't, Of the many incidents like this Europe-wide where has their text messages or manifestos recorded the desire to sow division, Answer .. There isn't.
They write about hating their targets and a desire to kill and destroy their targets,

When my grandparents lived in egypt in the 60s there was no social media and yet these attacks were a daily occurrence. Despite living in a gated compound with armed guards attackers still found their way in to carry out atrocities. I think you are mistaken in your analysis, there is something fundamentally different about the mindset of a certain subset of people that make it impossible to live and let live around them.

This is a good example of the simplistic thinking that leads to "they're just different and wrong" ... the "they" being whoever you like, westerners, gays, Christians, Muslims.

The motivations of terrorists in Egypt in the 60s was completely different from the motivations for what's just happened in Berlin.

Really? Educate me. When there are a subset of extremists who genuinely believe anyone with different views to them must either convert, pay the jizyah and live as subhuman slaves or be put to death and are willing to die for that cause, how do we go about living around that? Pretending it isnt happing hasnt worked in the past and isnt working now.

What's the end game to this. Head in the sand and hope they tire themselves out wiping out innocent lives going about their business.

Seems like it's what we've been doing for the last 20 years. It's not working. The fatigue is real.

I think we can be intolerant or even hate violence without hating or being intolerant of certain types of people. It's the latter that makes it worse rather than solving the problem. Same way that a guy driving into LBGT people does more harm to his cause than it helps it.

Very few people think that way. And their views don't come out of a vacuum and they don't come from religious education. They do not come from religions education. They do not come from religious education. These people are not bleeding theologians.

Their behaviour is a reaction to the social/economic/political environment in which they've grown up and in which either they feel they are being oppressed, or they feel their lives have no hope, no purpose, no value ... and they look for some Big Idea that they can latch onto that will give them them self-respect and purpose. The environment might be genuinely toxic ... like being born in a Palestinian refugee camp, or into a failed state where you watch half your family get killed ... and it might be because you've screwed up your life from an early age in South East London with drugs and crime.

The Big Idea itself hardly matters at all. That's why it is daft to say "because Islam". The Big Idea is typically nationalism, or anti-colonialism, or a perverse religious interpretation (typically sectarian), or political (e.g. people claiming to be Communists or anarchists), but it can also be animal rights, or environmentalism, or anti-war/nukes. The point is a vulnerable individual will jump on whichever of those Big Ideas happens to pop up on their radar. They're looking for a lightning rod for their own issues. They're looking for a cause.
