Why was I not surprised whenever BBC said 5 of the top 15 areas for seizures of uninsured cars are in Birmingham?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clyr7dmry5mo

The Birmingham postcodes which account for the five hot spots are B25, B18, B66, B21 and B35.

It seems however it is people not understanding that cars need to be insured rather than deliberate criminalty.

"Hayley Sutcliffe, from the MIB, said: "It's a diverse area so people coming into the country might not know the laws and the legislation of the Road Traffic Act."

Insurance status should be available online like MOT history is.
Also consequences for lack of insurance should be much harsher.

most likely the person who can't get insurance on a Lambo for any price.

Points are a lot more relevant than fines if the fines are only £300 or so for not having insurance - people will take their chances if the cost of getting fined is massively lower than the cost of buying insurance.

But then points only work if the driver cares about having a licence - and again the punishment for driving without a licence needs to be more severe than an affordable fine otherwise for some it will make financial sense to take the risk (especially if they're young and/or driving something with expensive insurance).

Yes, I'm surprised Bradford wasn't mentioned.

Insurance is mandatory in countries where people in these areas have emigrated from, so why would Hayley think they wouldn’t realise that it’s the same in the UK??

How many third worlders are diving on our roads now? Lack of insurance has always been an issue however this leap should be no surprise.

I'm sure Hayley will be hauled in for some mandatory re-education to rid her of her horrible far right ways.

Hayley's a mug if she actually believes that.

Ignorance is no excuse.

Probably a "rental" one which was either driven by somebody other than the renter, or one which was only insured for the owner, or on a trade policy or some other wheeze.

They obviously know you shoudl have insurance.

But I wouldn’t say insurance is that widespread all over the world. When I lived in Thailand I didn’t have insurance on my motorbike. Spent a month riding down Vietnam with no insurance… similar for Cambodia. If/when I visit India I’ll buy a motorbike and no doubt will spend a month or two riding it with no insurance.

Don’t get my wrong. I have travel insurance and an international driving licence etc. insurance just isn’t a thing there. Not a thing the police care about at least.

I'm even more surprised the usual suspects aren't here to tell everyone they're being 'racist'.

Where is Stewie anyway? Haven't seem him for ages.

I was wondering the same thing, not been seen for nearly a month according to his profile. As much as I disagree with the pro troll, I do hope he's ok.
