Aged 79. News just breaking that JV has passed away.

For me not just a great player but a fantastic commentator, that made watching snooker much more enjoyable.

RIP John

I'll remember him best for putting on some entertainment when a match had finished early

Sad, a bit of an icon. Whilst never a particular fan it's amazing to recall how utterly massive snooker was for a time in the 80's.

Did so much for snooker, even if not on the table himself.

The game certainly wouldn't be where it is today without the likes of him bringing it to the masses.

A sad day for snooker fans everywhere.

One of the very few famous people I have ever met (briefly). He was entertaining attendees at a company do in London 23 years ago with trick shots and hand shakes. Nice chap.

It is a real shock. As the BBC article says, he was commentating as recently as 17 days ago.

Yep as said in the snooker thread,

"Lost a great man in the snooker community frown "

Was commentating at the Masters last month.

He was a decent player but his mocking fellow professionals in how they played was very funny and his commentary always seemed to be spot on to me
RIP

Not too far short of John Virgo's age, but sad to see him hand his cue in.

Yeah, remember being sat with my Dad in the 1980s, in absolute hysterics watching his impressions.

Simpler times, more innocent times, and marked by people who were great at their sport but didn't take it too seriously.

RIP John Virgo.
