Probably overcooked somewhat with evacuating 200 homes, but 2 polish nationals arrested for having bomb materials,

There are explosives and then there are *explosives*, could be all sorts from fireworks upwards.

When I look at some purchase suggestions on Amazon for example it's fairly obvious a lot of people are trying out some applied chemistry at home, at least if the 'other people also bought' combos are a clue. Bet if they did a trawl they'd find hundreds at it.

The reactions to these things are often overcooked but people like to play worst case, as if peeps had cooked up 1000lb of DIY RDX in the kitchen using the hexamine you can no longer buy.

Indeed, they might have been pyro enthusiasts making flash powder for all we know.

A school chum of mine, along with his housemates, was arrested in our first year at uni due to theatrical pyros.

One of his housemates was the pyro guy for a theatre company, had the requisite training and licence but stupidly, and without the knowledge of his housemates, had brought his work home with him (a big no no). A plumber, who'd been called to the house by the landlord, discovered what looked like bombs and bomb making materials, and (rightly) informed plod.

I don't know if this was a factor in the response, but it was a house of young men who were all Irish-born or the sons of Irish-born... There was a dawn raid and they were stormed by armed police, arrested and taken in for some rather angry questioning. A house full of nice middle-class student chaps who had literally no idea why they were waking up with guns in their faces. Was not fun!

Obviously all cleared up quite quickly but it was not a fun time and he was worried it would affect his future prospects despite being innocent.

Sounds similar to a, ridiculously intelligent but definitely on some sort of spectrum, friend of mine at uni. Was forever making up various concoctions in his flat kitchen before taking them out to a nearby deserted beach to blow stuff up.

It all came to head when we came out of an exam one day and he was bundled into the back of an unmarked Volvo to be taken for questioning while his flat was searched.

He eventually got off with a caution which certainly hasn't done him any harm - he's doing pretty well after designing some pretty innovative industrial products, business seemingly now worth ~£50m.
