I feel I’m in a state of despair. Politicians are useless. Most MSM are not interested in serious journalism and just publish misinformation, gross exaggeration and are trying to catch people out. Dog whistles everywhere. People are being bombarded with fascist racism day in day out. Nothing works as it should. Government induced red tape just makes business harder and more expensive. You work long and hard and the exchequer wants an ever greater share of it. The money wasted on defence. Why the fk can’t we just get along with each other? There’s always somebody trying to rip you off - you can’t watch cycling on Eurosport anymore, we want £40 pm for that now. A large proportion of society are dishonest – have you been mis sold car finance? Yes, yes, yes, gimme the money. The cost of living is crazy - £8 for a sodding sausage and chips yesterday. Simple respect for each other is a dim distant memory.

I’m glad I’m in my mid 60’s. Only another 10 years to put up with this crap.

Isn't it £31 ppm for Eurosport?. In any case that is crazy. Used to like watching the cycling back in the day. Some tennis on Eurosport as well.

I'm with you on a lot of that. Seems like all the "progress" in many aspects of life hasn't really led to a better standard of life for a lot of people. Once i retire the laptop and the phone are going in the bin, full detachment from the wider world will suit me fine smile

It s increasingly difficult to see what future humanity has when you look at just how divided, aggressive and tribal we are. From major conflict like Israel/Gaza, Russia/Ukraine etc to trivia like towns right next door to one another hating each other because of their f*cking football teams, it does appear that despite all our intelligence and capability mankind is simply too stupid to take by far the most beneficial path to our own long term survival and just learn to get along with one another. I agree, it s depressing. We re an awful species, frankly.

You do wonder if social media has added much to the world compared to the disadvantages that widespread disinformation, bullying etc bring to society. Giving everyone a voice seems to have amplified the village idiots who could easily be ignored previously but now run countries like America.

Chin up man! The weather is fabulous, Glasto has begun, we have a fantastic summer of sport ahead (including Le Tour free to view on ITV4) and next weekend is the Le Mans Classic. What’s not to love.

But we've achieved way more than any other species i know of.....

For example, Rufus is getting upset about paying tax. Yet think how that tax supports health care, maternity care, social care etc.

In bygone eras, there was far more suffering and needless death. Ie my grandparents generation: only 50% of kids made it to adulthood.

Plus, there are other species that fight and kill each other - i would say the vast majority of humans don't do that, though devastating wars are not exactly new (Google Cannae).

So im not quite as depressed about it.

I think there are socio, economic and political issues facing the UK, definately. We can look back to the past for examples of things that worked well (or didn't work), but we shouldn't want to live there.

I put my phone down last night and read a book instead, as I'm sick of finding myself scrolling through endless shorts (videos) that get me annoyed.

But it's far too big and topic for a Saturday morning when I've not had any coffee yet, but the solution (to me) has to involve people being able to accept changes they might not like.

If politics can only deliver what people (say they) want, you end up with short term populism.

The last 3 years of my job have been dominated by the short term cuts made by Lord Pickle, that threw decades of established governance out of the window - it will take over a decade to rebuild what was broken in months.

I would urge people not to be so ready to throw things out in the name of quick win tax cuts (cough doge)

Incidentally, I heard a keynote speech from Amol Rajan this week, who gave some of his pretty powerful views on how to break the "deadlock" or mailise society seems to be stuck in.

Can't recall it all but it included a proper shake up of education, tackling elitism, and frankly getting our population "working" better.

But doing that will take money, which means posters like rufus have to pay more, or someone else accept less public services (and it is politically very hard to take things off people once they have tbem)

I’m not religious but there’s a prayer that sums this up

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference"

You have to learn to filter out the noise, or it will pull you under.

You mean the younger generation who think us boomers are a load of racists for expressing concern about immigration?

Having said that, I have been on Reddit for a few years and have noticed that the general feeling towards immigration is changing.

We haven't had a decent Government since John Major. Just a load of self serving idiots who had no love for our country.

The best thing I ever did was turn the telly off and stop reading the news.
Seriously.
Unless it directly affects you, then you don't have to worry about it.
Cut loose the friends who have half empty glass, draw the half full crowd nearer.
Enjoy the world and your friends and the simple pleasures in life.
It really does work.

I have a mate who thinks like this and it’s ruining his life.

My advice to him was to stop watching the news and live his life.

Didn’t work it’s like an addiction.

yes

I wonder if some people don't appreciate it could be because they are 50/60/70 rather than 20/30/40 and they are letting their age take the fun and optimism out of life?

When I was young it was strikes, power cuts, The National Front, street riots, AIDS, the Falklands, The Yorkshire Ripper, fires and train crashes, rampant inflation and unemployment etc etc etc. But I was busy getting on with my life. Like most young people probably are now.

Anyway, haven't we got this thread somewhere else on PH?
