Not sure how much truth there is but Labour are backing proposals for higher water bills for water used at peak times...

Surely putting everyone on a meter would then have everyone paying for what they use?

I think my water company would really struggle to put me and my neighbours on smart meters as the water meter is buried about 50cm underground and over 20 metres away from my property. My broadband router is good, but not that good! 
There were 'smart' water meters before you got broadband.
It will be no problem at all, with the correct technology.

Mine is under the pavement approx 25 metres from where it enters my house
