Nice to see the first prosecution with a strong sentence.

“He was living on benefits in a taxpayer-funded home, having arrived in the country as an asylum seeker in 2022, according to reports, despite a previous drug-smuggling conviction in Italy.“

A decent chunk of my acquaintances in their 20s dream of their own place, but instead they have to work full time and live with mum and dad

Sounds like we could have easily avoided the issue by kicking him the fk out of the UK when he arrived illegally as a convicted criminal in 2022.

People like him must be pissing themselves laughing at us. Hopefully this conviction might make a few think again.

My local school is raising funds for pencils and basics like that

Meanwhile, free housing and the like for convicted illegals.

Yeah, unfortunately at that point there was a massive backlog of asylum applications and it was taking over a year to get through them. Also given it seems to have been only 8 months between his arrival in the October and the NCA arrest in the June, there's a reasonable chance the NCA were quite happy knowing where he was and wouldn't have wanted his removal expedited in any case.

If it leads to bigger fish and more convictions, then it would have been worth it.

Agree but it's a big IF.

It makes you wonder how many other smugglers are UK based receiving benefits & housing.

Mmmm yeah, with such a lucrative business going on, receiving benefits and housing really is the last straw. He probably didn't pay any tax on that profit either!

Ya reckon? I'll have a look on Companies House for Ahmed's People Smuggling Ltd, just to see. He could have been a successful Turkish barber of course...

Even if we ignore the conviction, why can someone from Egypt, which AFAIK is a popular holiday destination, not a war torn hell hole, claim 'asylum' here?

Yep, it makes you wonder. Don't wonder too much though..... His estimated income from it and the number of people smuggled works out to be just a bit more than three grand each. Pretty cheap when you consider that people were paying a lazy ten-fold more for the same passage from Indonesia to Australia twenty years ago. Immigration, through whatever means of passage or side of the law, is a huge industry. As it's a huge industry there's also a lot of marketing of such in source countries.

Good. Horrible scum.

In a probable (misguided) attempt to add some levity, referring to him being in a managerial role made me chuckle somewhat - I don't know why but I can imagine him doing a performance review. "Now, Ahmed, you piloted 5 channel crossings this quarter, you're more than exceeding your KPIs. I'd like to offer you a bonus of cocaine and a sidearm"
