Not something I had heard before but apparently a recent study shows that some cities in the US are sinking at up to 5cm a year! Apparently the main cause is not the weight of the buildings but rather the over extraction of ground water. With population growth the problem is likely to get worse. Such changes can’t be good for roads or stability of buildings.

Well documented problem with Mexico City. sinking upto 50cm per year:

Causes many issues, such as with with the sewers, subways and building subsidence.

The original ground level of Seattle is still accessible through the basements (which were originally the ground floor) of some of the buildings. Fascinating tour.

Not surprising when you see how obese some of the residents are.

Lots of cities have had 'ground level' raised.
Rivers buried under culverts.
Railways and roads built on embankments, then the old ground floor becomes a basement.
Areas of Bristol, London, Edinburgh for instance.

Separate issue from existing buildings making their way closer to the centre of the earth!

Thanks. Thought I was going mad for a second there.
