The Speecy points out that this week's edition somehow managed to ignore the biggest news story of the wee - the revelation at the Supreme Court that if you have male tackle you arev not a woman.

"‘We begin with the bigger stories of the week,’ said guest host Katherine Parkinson, as is traditional. These turned out to be steel nationalisation and the bin strike in Birmingham. We also heard about the Blue Origin ‘mission’, gambling on the election date, Liz Truss launching her own app. But the thing everybody was actually talking about? No. That just hung in the air like a vicar’s fart, with everybody pretending it hadn’t happened."

Why? Do they think transwomen are women?

Are they too cowardly to raise their head above the parapet even with a Supreme Court ruling and open themselves up to hate mail from the trans lobby?

Don't want to be on the same side of any issue as JK Rowling or Graham Linehan?

The correct answer appears to be in the comments.

"Hat Trick Productions are responsible for HIGNFY as they were for Father Ted, and are the same people who essentially cancelled Graham Linehan and terminated the Father Ted musical, which no doubt would have been very funny indeed. So it's not surprising they avoided anything to do with trans given that Graham was right all along."

Is everybody talking about it (the high court ruling) ? Maybe in your circle they are. But I haven't heard anybody actually talking about it over the bank holiday weekend.

Quite.

Noticeable how the thread on here got pulled presumably because some people couldn't help themselves.

A ruling about the equalities act doesn't mean Graham Linehan was 'right all along'.

You're right, he was right all along because he passed key stage 1 biology.

Intro in the speccy article.

“ Like most people, I haven’t tuned in to Have I Got News For You for years. But when I heard of a staggering omission in last Friday night’s edition, I just had to see it – or, rather, not see it – with my own eyes”

Went out of their way to be offended by a show they don’t watch then paid to write about it, lol. I’m in the wrong bloody job.

I don’t watch it often but I can understand why some would want to do a hatchet job on it. Can’t have TV they disagree with being aired.

To be fair the current top story is the pontif passing on.

The "other" story in a way is a non story it's just a clarification of an existing law from 2010. Essentially if you thought differently to the supreme court you were wrong in law but equally you are free to believe what you like an can live as you wish as long as that doesn't infringe the law. E.g. you can drive a car when an where you like you just have to drive on same side as everyone else, if you wish to drive on the other side either do it on a private track or another country.

In this day and age being a front page newspaper item or headlines on a broadcast, doesn't actually make it important or even news.

This pretty much sums that up.

I do however think it is true that HIGNFY has got less funny over the years though.
My rationale for this is:
  • It's hard to satirise what's been happening politically in the last few years because it writes itself and isn't ultimately all that funny.
  • It was easier to write jokes about the right being cruel and in it only for themselves, when they were trying to hide that from view rather than saying it out loud.

When does the show get recorded and when does the writing take place?

The judgment was published on 16 April.

Maybe wait until this week's episode?

Biggest story of the wee indeed.

Theres a football show on BBC Scotland which goes out on a Friday night and is filmed on a Wednesday.

Presumably HIGNFY is the same which would mean the ruling probably wasn't passed (or it was passed during the recording which would leave no time to write) before they filmed this weeks show.

I could be wrong but it looks like HIGNFY is usually recorded on a Thursday night for broadcast the following evening, with a longer version (fewer edits) broadcast on the following Monday.

Regardless of your thoughts either way it was significant news and generated a large online impact.

Perhaps they just thought there was little humour to be mined in the topic. Trans-rights seem to be a minefield, and regardless of any individuals position on the matter, there seems to be always at least some people offended.

That's a good point end of day it's an entertainment show why upset people who do feel really rather upset at the moment.
