Sounds like a fairly bad one, 7.7.

Quite hard shaking felt as far away as Bangkok where it seems a building under construction has gone down.

Given thats 1000km away this will defo be a big problem in Myanmar.

Not wishing to make light of what appears to be serious situation the bridge is down:

Based on the reports so far, it appears the death toll is in the hundreds and will probably go higher with widespread destruction.

I expect so - although the regime in power at the moment in Mayanmar is not the most open or honest about such matters so I expect we will never know the true number of casualties.

Youngest flew into Bangkok this morning frown
Roads are jammed or shut, bridges are shut pending inspection for damage. A 30 story building has collapsed with people inside. They think 2 dead and 43 trapped.

His friend in Chiang Mai said it shook all the water out the swimming pool

Doesn't sound good in Myanmar, they are predicting in the order of 100,000 deaths.

edit: 81 construction workers missing in the unfinished building. apparently over 400 working there

Despite some stupid frivolous comments above, this is going to involve potentially thousands of deaths, possibly 10’s of thousands.

An earthquake of that magnitude that caused the damage in Bangkok 1000 km away is going to have far, far worse consequences in the region of the epicentre. The fact that Myanmar’s military government has specifically requested external assistance is an early clue that this is bad.

Its after 10pm now in Bangkok. Youngest has made it to his hotel, there's some buildings nearby that have lost chunks of plaster, bricks etc. His hotel is ok.

He's up high, the building collapse was near Rot Fai park, on the route from the airport. They were directing traffic around the area, and it's very lit up. It's a pile of rubble apparently.

Scenes from Bangkok, this is miles from the center of the quake. It must be terrible near the center of the quake

There's already been 12. Youngest felt a couple of small ones at the airport, lasted about a minute

https://www.nationthailand.com/news/general/400479...

Theres some claims Bangkok had a 6.4 quake 12 mins after the 7.7 shock in Myanmar

Wow pretty serious.

Got plenty of friends in the Bangkok area and my cousin. We've heard off the friends, they were hiding under the desks with the kids in their class when it was going on. Not heard back off my cousin, but he's not living near the fallen building, so I suspect he's gonna be fine. Would be nice to hear from him though.

Bluesky starter pack here with a load of knowledgeable earthquake people on it:

A handy way of filtering out the garbage that always fills the internet when these things happen, if you're interested in the details.

The only building to collapse in Bangkok.

Fake steel, illegal foreign ownership, and a Chinese state contractor caught sneaking into the rubble to retrieve sensitive documents. The project was part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and now it’s at the centre of a $60 million scandal.

I'm really shocked at this (not really, was discussing the fact with a mate soon after it happened) given how often people on here that obviously have skin in the Chinese tat game must work in manufacturing tell me they are all about quality these days or will manufacture/build to the standard requested biggrin
