The ICJ - what is it good for? Nothing! Say it again!
Discussion
So we now have two parallel stories courtesy of our amazing government where the ICJ appears to be playing a key influence. I very much suspect that is largely because our PM is a lawyer and very much interested in legal norms.
Chagos:

Where a 13-1 ruling by the ICJ has resulted in a domino effect whereby the UK gov is apparently genuinely concerned that it may have national security implications if we don’t hand over the islands to Mauritius and not only that but pay them 9billion for the privilege.
And then for stuff and giggles
Meanwhile Lammy is meeting with Caribbean leaders to discuss (only) potential slave trade reparations supported by an ICJ judge who has argued that multi trillion reparations are just a case of ‘when’.

So.
In 1998 under that notorious fascist Bill Clinton signed the Rome Statute constituting the ICJ but did not pass it to congress to approve since when the US had regarded the ICJ as irrelevant.
I am rather of the mood, given the crap above re Chagos and Slave Reparations, to think the US dodged a bullet.
So should we derogate or withdraw? Because frankly it looks like a charter for chancers.

List of cases above. Lots of territorial disputes (usually fishing) in there but previous cases include Kosovo and currently open ones include Ukraine and genocide.
The US can do gunboat diplomacy and Israel can get away with anything so long as US support remains, but I wouldn't say we're in the same boat where we can throw a tantrum and walk away without consequences.
Are we going to throw this out for the sake of Diego Garcia just to keep the US happy?
