"Witness accounts recalled a truck crashing into a crowd at high speed before the driver got out and started firing a weapon, with police returning fire, CBS reported".

It seems like automobiles driven at speed into large crowds is becoming the new weapon of choice.

I’ve slowly seen pedestrian areas being encapsulated in concrete blocks, and expect this now to become the new normal. Very sad.

FBI: 'This is not a terrorist event' and I think that's at the same press conference.

What an appalling attack.

Hmmm

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said the city had been impacted by a "terrorist attack" and she was in direct contact with the White House;

However, the FBI, which is leading the investigation, said it was "not a terrorist event" - but "improvised explosive devices" had been found and checks were taking place to see if they were "viable";

Berlin 2016, Wisconsin 2021. Just a few major attacks which happened years before these recent ones.

I wouldn't expect anything to change with pedestrian areas as these attacks are still very rare.

New Orleans updates: 10 dead in 'terrorist attack' with pickup in New Orleans, local officials say

LaToya Cantrell, the mayor of New Orleans, described the incident as a "terrorist attack." The FBI said it wasn't yet using that term. Anne Kirkpatrick, superintendent of police, said the driver had attempted to kill as many people as possible.

What is shocking is that this type of event is no longer shocking, and some type of vehicle is now used as as a weapon in the same way as guns and knives are.

Bit of an odd question! Nobody said it's 'acceptable' although our politicians do tell us the threat of terror attacks are “part and parcel of living in a big city”.

In the case of Waukesha, the parade was in the road and Brooks drove through the barricade. A pedestrianised area would not have helped in that case considering they opted to hold a parade in the road.

Plane crashes happen and people still take planes. Mass shootings happen in schools and people still buy guns and go to school. Terrorist attacks happen and we still have to get on with life.

I don't foresee that a few attacks are going to result in pedestrianised cities as a result.

Reads like the US (no idea if it's a local law enforcement or nationwide standard) has official criteria for an event to be treated as terrorism a bit like we do.

Seems the likely explanation for the contradiction at the press conference earlier assuming it wasn't simple human error and the FBI spokesperson misspoke.

There's a big difference between plane crashes and criminal activity intended to kill and maim.
