An 18-year-old Briton faces up to 20 years in a Dubai prison for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl while the pair were on holiday in the emirate, a human rights campaigner has said.
Marcus Fakana, of Tottenham, north London, was on holiday with his family when he began a secretive holiday romance in September with another Londoner, who has since turned 18, according to Radha Stirling, of campaign group Detained in Dubai.
After returning home and seeing pictures and chats, the girl's mother reported the relationship to Dubai police, who then arrested Mr Fakana at his hotel, Ms Stirling said.

seems pretty harsh of her mother to attempt to get him jailed for 20 years upon seeing some texts when he's merely a year older - she must have really hated him on the basis of the messages?
It says in the story that her parents were "conservative" (which i read as religious, rather than Tory) and that the daughter had to lie and sneak away to see him, so her mother is probably pretty annoyed at her, and the lad's being caught in the crossfire. Given how highly sexual purity for girls is valued within some religious groups, there may be quite a lot of social pressure on the family too.blue_haddock said:
I feel there is more to this story than we are being told.
It seems in that part of the world, you don't really need any more story. It's their law and it's no doubt easily consultable.
Some sort of prominent travel advisory might be handy for places like the UAE, because their laws will be a long way from ours in many cases and it's a destination that's been fully normalised in the average tourst's mind.

Dems the rules. I would never travel to countries like these due to the incredibly strict laws and harsh punishments in place.
Good luck to the lad. No chance he'll be released.
He will be, they always are. I’ve known UK citizens arrested on intent to supply charges and released within 6 mths. Good luck to the lad. No chance he'll be released.
The issue with having a case publicized is that due process must be followed. This may well include him seeing jail time but it will be commuted once the media light shines elsewhere.
Because this is always the case despite all the usual tirades and outrages. It’s a useful squirrel by the tabloids but not helpful at all to the detainee. Might be a solution to paying his legal fees but that’s about it.

How peculiar is it that many of you expect people to obey our laws but feel that you are exempt from those of other countries?
If it's the law, then it's the law...don't break it.
Yep - they might be super strict but it does seem to have resulted in a very safe country. If it's the law, then it's the law...don't break it.
But there are more conservative views that the lawmakers must consider and a line drawn. That appears to be 18yrs old in this case, but still too harsh for some.

I agree, the trouble is it’s very accessible for the ‘traditional” package holiday brigade, who are going for sun, sea and ……If it's the law, then it's the law...don't break it.
