Come across this today, find it very odd, I mean surely the body would be very close?

There have been posts from mods on this topic asking for restraint because there are gory photos (which I've not personally seen).

What is the etiquette or accepted manner to post grisly decapitated persons pictures on social media?

I presume it's legal?

Free speech and all that.

Apparently passers by were teabagging the head and picking it up before they realised it was real.

There's some pretty graphic photos and videos doing the rounds.

From what I read, the bus was unaware and the head and body weren’t next to each other. Some revellers out for Halloween picked the head up thinking it was a Halloween display or prop.

Absolutely terrible for the family, but a bizarre set of circumstances and timings combining to make an odd event even weirder.

Head to Twitter, there’s some huge conspiracy theories going on over there regarding this incident. There are many images in circulation as well which are pretty gruesome so be warned.

I pass no comment on this incident, however ...

I've dealt with two separate accidents where the deceased have been decapitated

I've also dealt with collisions where other body parts have been dismembered and on occasion where the body parts were spread over a wide area

It happens and some scenes can be absolutely horrific to deal with and you really don't want the public anywhere near them

Legal and free speech maybe.

How does this even happen in a low speed environment? I know it's gruesome, but how?

i had one ear on this until the radio report said 'police are appealing for people not to share images of this incident'

the streisand effect

from what i can gather the bus driver was unawares of the collision and the body parts ended up quite the distance apart.

And for it to happen on halloween weekend folk initally thought it was a joke mask or fake.

Unfortunately I came across this video by mistake as have many other people (online clip titled Halloween decorations) and thankfully there is a big effort to get the footage removed from mainstream media (it will always end up on those dark websites)

It happened at 7:15pm on a Saturday on what you could consider Halloween weekend, in the busiest part of a capital city. A number of people stumbled across in person before the police arrived and I suspect some thought this was a Halloween prank/costume etc.

The police then closed off a wide area and closed some venues which is where the wild conspiracy theories are coming from (terrorist attack etc)

I know the street/area well. It has lots of bars/clubs along it and there are pinch points/narrow pavements for pedestrians with lots of people crossing. It’s particularly busy at night with people/groups out drinking. There have been a number of accidents over the years, and as a result they banned vehicles after 10pm many years ago as it was particularly bad with groups of revellers spilling out on to the road. I think they were planning to close it completely at some point. I suspect that will happen sooner rather than later now.

My non conspiracy theory guess is a bus wing mirror.

I've worked in or around the Cowgate in Edinburgh for 20 years now. For the last five or so years it has become a bit of a racetrack between private hire drivers and uber eat delivery riders using it to get around. There are restrictions to traversing the whole road from one end to another but there is unrestricted access from side streets that are utilised all night long. The amount of cars and people on the road during the Fringe in August is particularly insane.

Additionally, wedding venues and even the tattoo will see multiple passenger coaches parked up and collecting folk throughout the day and night. It really is a very busy road with the majority of pavement to narrow for the amount of pedestrians trying to use it.

It's easy to understand how it happened. I've seen the footage and the images. It is a bloody shame, potentially someone's father or grandfather has been killed and the aftermath has been rather keenly and grotesquely made public for all. The speed at which CCTV footage of the lads picking the had up was distributed needs to be examine, someone with unrestricted access is abusing that system.

The unhinged twitter hysteria, scaremongering and spreading of fake news is brutal. I have seen it before but I think because I know the area well and knew the story already it has been a bit more of a shock to see the efforts some accounts are going to to try and convince others that it may be terrorism related, etc. It is clear that it doesn't matter the facts or realities around an event, they will make the narrative fit somehow.

Those mirrors do stick out a bit and when the bus comes near the kerb, the mirrors are quite far over the pavement. I could see it causing a nasty bump on someones head, but to lop it off?

Saw one of the videos by accident, wasn't sure what i was looking at, at first as i'd not seen the news at that point. I can't imagine how awful that must be for the poor guys family to have this so public.

My thoughts to. I would have thought a wing mirror would knock someone over at worst.

This is a perpetual worry of mine, being quite tall. On occasion I've felt the 'woosh' of a bus mirror whizz past my head. Much like the parrots of PH but more frightening.

But as Doc M says, I think you're looking at a possibly lethal skull fracture rather than it striking your head from your shoulders.

Apparently the oap tripped when he got out of the bus and his head somehow got caught up in the wheel arch and ripped his head off.

Poor chap.

I think the conspiracy theories may have been fuelled by:

Nighclubs and bars in the surrouding area were ordered to close as students in nearby accomodation were evacuated.
So it seems the authorities weren't sure of it all themselves. A sign 'o the times I guess!
