I note that this gentleman, the worlds strongest man, died yesterday aged just 75.

In 1975 I was stationed at RAF Wittering, Geoff was the local village bobby and I would often see him around the village.

At the time, this road could be accessed from the northbound A1,

https://www.google.com/maps/@52.6227769,-0.4583855...

I was returning to base one evening when I came across Geoff's panda car, blue light flashing, protecting a lorry that had turned right. under the side of the lorry was buried a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow...this was long before 'under run' barriers were fitted.. I pulled around the lorry to the south side and looked for Geoff and found him throwing up in the ditch. He recognised me and told me to bugger off...' Do not go near that, lad, it's 'orrible'

The driver's head was on the rear parcel shelf of the RR.

Just one of the many things that the village bobby had to deal with

RIP, my old friend.

I remember watching him on WSM back in the day. Its surprising how "small" he looks now compared the absolute units that compete now.

First foray into watching WSM was watching Geoff.

I'm slightly surprised more people haven't commented.

He was big by normal man standards. He wasnt as big as some in his era, but was a very good, strong!, all-round athlete including quite a fast runner.

My mum did ballroom dancing lessons with him.

Wasn't he a keen canary breeder or the like?

Budgies. In a clip from an interview he mentions winning a budgerigar championship as one of his proudest achievements.

I was listening to a radio talk show today and they were talking about him. Apparently one of his celeb things was visiting schools and handing out the term prizes, etc, etc.

Anyway part of his ‘act’ was lifting the headmaster over his head. hehe

Interesting story, sounds like a very dark episode of Heartbeat.

Not that old these days 75, another name from our childhoods gone, always assumed he would be older than that to be honest.

Anyone remember this ?

Makes me ponder on my own mortality, I'll be 74 in a week or two!

At that time Geoff was shot putting at Olympic level, the local butcher sponsored him with steak!

Lovely guy to have a natter with, knew most people on his patch and give a wave when driving or a greeting if on foot.

Great memories to have, always came across as the "gentle giant" type, im 54 next week and you do realise the clock is ticking louder and louder, just need to crack on and not dwell on it. I didnt exist for millenia before 1970, and wasnt fussed, and will, at some point not exist again and I am happy with that, life is the tricky bit inbetween !

I met him briefly at an athletics meeting in '74.
He had a great attitude towards all the competitors & won by a mile.
He drove off in a Triumph Vitesse, which was listing at an angle of about 15 degrees to starboard thanks to his 24ish stone!

A legend of a man.
Lived a good age too, considering the massive strains he must have put his body through.
RIP.

A proper celebrity of the day that worked his ticket.

Not like today when having and ‘attitude’ and Turkey teeth is all you need,
