The death has been announced of General Sir Mike Jackson GCB,DSO, CBE, DL at the age of 80

Former Chief of the Defence Staff and head of the Army, former para and the man who when commanding the NATO rapid reaction forces in Kosovo famously defied an order from the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, US General Wesley Clark, to surround the Russian troops at Pristina airport and block the runways telling General Clark

"I'm not going to start the Third World War for you".

He served for 45 years and had an extremely distinguished career

A man described as a soldier's solider and one who reputedly could drink many an officer under the table in the mess

RIP Sir

With the benefit of hindsight I’m surprised so many are lauding his action with the Russians.

Interesting that a bloke who did more than enough to earn the respect of his country gets two comments and one of those was to criticise him for not predicting how the world would pan out twenty-five years later. Maybe he should have joined a boy ban instead.

RIP Sir!
