Contrary to my expectation that the Christmas bonus paid to State pensioners will be axed in the budget, I see from the media that it will be paid this year. I better start planning how to spend my forthcoming £10......maybe as a down payment on my winter fuel bill.

Why do we bother with these absurd nominal cash payments? We’ve become obsessed with and hooked on cash benefits over these last x years. If the story is correct presumably this is with more than one eye on the optics of it all. It’s pathetic.

Enjoy your tenners.

Presumably you'll be passing yours on to a fellow pensioner who needs it?

It would be better if the 'arold Wilson tenner was to be index linked for future years.

Then it would be a little compo for stealing our WFA.

Perhaps with an 'opt out' clause for those wealthy pensioners to use......

I got a letter from DWP today telling me I wouldn't be getting the winter fuel allowance.
It went on to explain that some benefits would entitle me to get it.

One of the qualifying benefits is income-based jobseeker's allowance.

Not sure how somebody in receipt of state pension could also be claiming JSA?

I assume that it covers some sort of edge case, but the age requirements for winter fuel allowance and JSA appear to be mutually exclusive.

I recently when I got a letter from HMRC about child benefit. I had opted out as I was in excess of the HICBC threshold, but after my sons passing they paid me 8 weeks of child benefit in a lump sum (as cash redeemable at the post office), which it turns out is not subject to the HICBC.

I thought that was a very strange policy.

Nigel F came up with a get out of jail free for the WFA dilemma.

Just link it to low rate tax payers.

It wasn't pathetic when first introduced and would have paid for a lot of Christmas expenditure. It just hasn't increased in 50 years, so why bother cancelling?

They could have done the same with WFA and in 50 years it would have bought a woolly jumper.
