Who knew? The Laffer curve applies to car parks as well as other taxes.

Brighton found that higher parking charges meant less revenue.

"Last year, it was estimated that higher charges had reduced the council’s parking revenue by as much as £1.2 million."

"the council’s Labour leadership, which took power in May last year, is moving away from the approach taken by a minority Green administration between July 2020 and May 2023.
Cllr Samar Bagaeen, an independent opposition councillor, hailed the council’s “about-turn”.
“The council’s approach to parking has for a number of years been both flawed and counter-productive, damaging the night-time economy in the city,” he said."

The new Labour administration is cutting charges.

In my local area in the west end of Glasgow there are swathes of empty on street car parking spaces because of the increased charges. People are going to the out of town centres instead.

Have the Green Party stated clearly whether they think a large loss of parking revenue is a problem or a success? I suppose you could reasonably argue either way depending on your point of view.

I thought Brighton would be well setup for EVs. They have loads of lamppost chargers dotted around but the possible parking charge implications for non-residents was confusing and contradictory (I found at least).

Far Left idealogical nutters in trying to destroy the local economy shocker.
Let's hope the not quite so far left nutters can turn things around. I won't hold my breath.
That said, I think the majority of town councils are on a mission to destroy the high street with their excessive parking charges. It's the main reason I avoid them.

I normally go about Easter and stay in the car park under the town hall and just checked the prices.

March 24 £5:70
March 23 £4:50
March 22 £4:00
March 21.£2.00
Per hours

So in 3 years they have tripled it and wonder no one’s using it.

Wife and I were regular visitors to Brighton. Several years back, having been charged around £18 to park for 3 hours centrally, we vowed not to return. Brighton's retail outlets and restaurants loss. Since then I've read about the dreadful decline generally so we won't be going back. There are much nicer places 1 1/2 hours from where we live

I would have thoguht parking charges in Brighton were purely academic, as it's more or less impossible to drive into the city in any reasonable time?

yes If the aim was to reduce car numbers then it's been a success.

Re the OP though, rather than reduce cost of tickets it seems to me that LA's just look to reduce places you can either park for free or less^. Absolute tts the lot of em.

Similarly my brother lives near Brighton and last time I visited we went onto town for a meal. Parking was at least £15 quid so we said we won't bother next time.

You’re driving the wrong way into the city.

Indeed I have never had a problem with getting into Brighton however the cost of parking means I rarely go.

Brighton does have a very good bus service and lots of people from round here drive near Brighton then catch the bus in.

We frequently visited Brighton, I really love the place, but traffic, parking and pricing have meant I just don’t bother anymore. Shame, as there are some nice shops

Very rarely go these days, but if I do I tend to park in the Marina which has 4 hours free parking and get a cab in.

We used to go 5 or 6 times a year as we have a couple of groups of friends living nearby. Stayed Friday to Sunday in a nice hotel and meet up over the weekend. Haven't been for 5 years or so as there are many better options now without all the downsides.
Shame really but their loss.

Brighton is fine, with numerous attractions for all ages. It doesn't really matter about car park charges as there aren't usually enough spaces anyway - squezed between the sea and the South Downs there's not been much space for cars, for decades.
Most people visiting or working in Brighton use the trains or the truly excellent bus services (reputedly best in the UK).
Cars are simply a no-no.

We used to be regular visitors about ten years ago, but haven't been since because of the parking charges. The only way we can realistically get there for a daytrip is driving, so I can't see us visiting again.

Fortunately (for Brighton) it's usually rammed full with visitors at any time of day, night, summer or winter.
They won't [can't] do much about car parking when they're pretty well inundated all the time anyway.

About the same as the Far Right ideological nutters. Thankfully the Tories were booted out in the last local elections around here.
Far better under the LDs, at least as far as parking is concerned.
