The PM salary is £170kpa (about 90k for being an MP, + £80k for being PM), which by my rough (and possibly wrong) calculations, is about £8500 net per month. Above average, but hardly something to write home about. Given that they can't even afford to buy clothes or tickets to see the football, should we not be paying our politicians more, so they are not so reliant on handouts and gifts, which invariably come with an associated cost? Of course the doors open to an ex-PM mean none will ever be short of more financially rewarding work once kicked out (well, almost none), but it does seem like they should be less easily 'bought' while in office by those seeking influence.

Only on PH could £8500 net per month mean "nothing to write home about". Unless I'm due a parrot.

For a such a highly qualified and employable chap (a KC no less), and given the time, money and effort to get to such a position, while opening yourself and your family up to constant criticism and scrutiny, then yes, it is a paltry amount. Most completely anonymous company directors will earn more, as will many senior managers, civil servants, other professionals, etc.

If I earnt £170k pa, with that pension provision, I absolutely would write home about it. In truth I’d probably send a text as the price of stamps these days is horrific. Perhaps less horrifying for someone on £170k pa, but my tightness, borne from a lifetime of not earning anything like £170k pa, would be a hard personality trait to throw off.

For clarity, no, I do not earn more than the PM.

Probably more appropriate to ask if you earn more than Sue Gray the Deputy PM. smile

The majority of PMs (And US Presidents for example) are independently wealthy before taking office.

The salary is a token IMO.

I doubt Rishi was budgeting his household to the measly £8500 a month.

FWIW.. as a standalone salary for the level of impact and importance.. I think it is woefully underpaid.

Maybe if it was better compensated, we'd attract better candidates.

In 3 years Starmer won't qualify for Winter Heating Allowance.
That's one positive.

I couldn’t live on that. Wouldn’t even pay for a new suit or pair of glasses.

This is PH, so of course! But as I don’t get anything for free, always feel skint with insane amounts of cash going out the door every month in “family lifestyle support”.

Look at that inflatable slide in the garden!

I’d never leave the (second, or is it third?) house.

Imagine the upkeep on that mother! That’s going to suck a big portion of that wage every month. £100 winter fuel payment wouldn’t heat the west wing.

Unless us tax payers are coughing up.

A London based Corporate Lawyer salary averages out at about £100K. Once at Senior partner level it will be at least £300K . In specialist fields income will be £500K- circa £1M .

There are many other sectors where the senior personnel will be £250K plus.

Average CEO pay in the UK is broadly similar although quite a few are in the millions.

Our PMs salary is not massive in comparison.

Tenure is not permanent and the state provided properties are nothing like owning on'e own home.

Answer to question. Retired now so not any more.

Just did a bit of googling and it seems the annual cost to the taxpayer of running it is around £1m -£1.2m plus another £200k+ for military staff and then the 24/7 365 armed police security on top of that which again will be a significant 6 figure amount

The issue of MP's salaries comes up now and again on PH. My view is that MP's could be both vastly overpaid or underpaid depending on their skills, experience, and knowledge. We need to remember that for most elected politicians none of these have any relevance on the odds of them getting elected - its a popularity contest voted on by members of the public, the majority of whom don't even know the name of the person they are voting for until they fill out the ballot.

As far as the PM goes, I don't think the position is well paid for the degree of responsibility, exposure and criticism that they receive.

To answer the OP question, no, I don't earn anywhere close to the PM's salary.

I’m sure starmer will agree with me when I say hand it over to the National trust. As a country we are skint and can’t afford it. Air BnB has some great holiday cottages for him wink
