I wonder if Rachel Thieves is going to steal this as well as Winter Fuel Allowance?

It was given by a Labour PM, so perhaps she dare not go there.

It would be both fitting and helpful to those of us who are just outside of the 'test' for Pension Credit to have this index linked as it has remained at ten quid since 'arold Wilson awarded it.

What do others think?

Highly likely because that's what it's called & has been for years.

https://www.gov.uk/christmas-bonus/eligibility

The bonus this year will be whether Pensioners get it, the chances of any increase are along the lines of zero.

More to the point,

1) do we have to have a whole new thread for every crazy individual conspiracy theory st that may or may not happen rather than just using one of the existing dozen threads, and

2) how much must it cost to administer a tenner!!?! Just up the rates across the rest of the year (or add it to the Dec payment because it's benefit based), rather than having the added friction from a sum that when introduced was probably a lot, and now really isn't...

Why should pensioners get a Christmas bonus?

Winter Fuel Payments for all pensioners were a Labour thing, but not sacrosanct. Heath's tenner in 1972 should be £115 now.

I’m guessing because employed people tend to get one. Also disabled people get it you know because it’s Christmas treat yourself to fish and chips once a year.

I last had a Christmas bonus in 1992z

It’s a state pension for god sake, it should be a standard monthly payment. Nothing more nothing less. Lump it into the overall
Payment.

Performance related, they get more if they use up all the doctors and dentist appointments before 9am and after 5 and a little bit more if they do their shopping at lunch time, bonus points if they use up all the Tesco meal deals.

A friend who lives in Austria told me that working there you get paid 13 times a year, and extra payment comes in December and is free of tax.

Sounds like a much better Christmas bonus!

So close.

Just scrap it.

Christmas bonus for being old. But at least it shows that politicians were fkwits in the 70s too, and that the electorate were just as easily bought.

I remember both Wilson and Heath well (I was an apprentice during their tenure), the former was PM twice.
The tenner Xmas bonus was introduced in 1972.
Look it up and see who was PM in that year.

When the £10 Christmas bonus was first introduced by 'Heath' in 1972, the weekly state pension was £6.75.

It's a good idea. The older folks will be able to put the heating on for anything up to twenty minutes before then sitting down to the King's speech.

I think I see how this arose. According to one source the Labour gov't, under Wilson, proposed a Christmas bonus for pensioners, but it wasn't introduced until the next Conservative government under Heath via the Pensioners and Family Income Supplement Payments Act 1972. If the source is wrong please accept my apologies in advance.

Madness. Imagine the wasted money throughout the system it must add up to billions.
