I’m not sure if there is a topic already running but it seems Germany has introduced checks on its borders

Its Poland and the Czech Republic only and its temporary. Oh, and its done in conjunction with both Poland and the Czech Republic with the Czechs also increasing random checks for those entering from Slovakia. But yeah, Germany has closed ALL of its borders with France, Austria, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

hehe

If it’s like Switzerland, as they say, it’ll amount to nothing more than a bit of a queue to drive past some bored looking coppers, mostly checking you’ve got a Motorway Tax sticker.

However that article is a year old and I’ve seen them tighten borders between Germany and Poland at Frankfurt (Oder) just as described. The OP’s post is dated today and talks about next Monday. It’ll remain to be seen how accurate it is, I regularly cross from Germany to Belgium (and vice versa) near to Aachen and suitable facilities already exist around that area.

Was in Kehl, Germany, ast week, just across the river Rhine from Strasbourg in France. We strolled across the river by foot and not even so much as some signage that you were moving across international boundaries, let alone controls!

On the other hand when I drove past Passau on the A3 and over the Danube into Austria recently I saw traffic Germany-bound being stopped at a makeshift point in the carriageway with traffic tailing back for miles, it looked horrendous.

On the return journey that border was fine but Slovenia into Austria just north of Maribor was queuing for 2-3km for something similar. Luckily I was able to follow some locals onto a local road where we just drove across the little border crossing up the road holding a passport up at a bored official, probably saved a few hours.

Oops, sorry, could have sworn it was a current one. I guess I need to get my eyes checked!

They should build a wall, they've had some experience. At least this time the machine guns would be facing outwards, rather than inwards.

When we drove to Salzburg in 2017, there were definitely controls on the Austrian border there, it took us an hour or so to get past.

Its existing checks at the Polish, Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland borders will be extended next week to France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark. Thats pretty much ALL its borders.

Your link is a year old.

I live in Basel and hop across the border quite frequently to go food shopping. Its a little more nuanced than simply holding up a passport since there are also frequent cross-border trams and busses. The last time these checks came in it consisted of checking every body on each tram which caused chaos to the timetables, additionally it is now common for German police to board the international trains in Switzerland and conduct checks (apparently if illegal migrants are found before the border they can be returned to Switzerland immediately).

A couple of times a week I take an ICE train from Zurich to Basel, the train then goes onto Hamburg. It is becoming more and more common that migrants are present on the train and offer no resistance when challenged for having no ticket - No passport or identifying documents are carried. In these cases I assume the route is coming from Italy or Austria.

That was the mistake we made at Singapore; the guns should point both ways! hehewobble

That is actually one of the WW2 myths. Most of the guns could traverse and fire inland, but a few heavy guns did not make much difference, particularly when they had very few HE shells.

Singapore was already effectively lost in any case by the time the Japanese got there.
