There's only so much that can be reported and popular news stories are issues such as Ukraine, global warming, migrants coming to the UK but what other issues are around which have short or long term impact on us but are not reported or discussed regularly.

I know they exist but as they're not discussed much, I'm struggling to think of therm.

Some I've thought of include -

The impact on child development from over use of mobile devices
Poor quality food over promoted resulting in poor health
Local authorities failing to improve services in line with increased council tax income
Sugar addiction

I've probably started this thread badly because the above issues are discussed but probably not as much as I think they should be when we see how much coverage issues such as migrants/global warming etc gets.

So by all means tear my list apart but what are you aware of which has short or long term impact on us but there is little public awareness or concern of?

Slightly off-topic, but I stopped listening to Radio 4 partly because there seemed to an endless list of issues to earnestly discussed.

The daily dose of bickering, handwringing and anguish was a bit much.

The food one I massively agree with, you realise just how out of shape the British are when you go abroad. Most places in the world have normal size and shaped humans. In the U.K. the average woman, is a lardy sloppy mess. English men just have to put up with it. Most men have beer guts and look crap too.

Go to Asia and all the women are in fantastic shape. Went to Croatia recently and the only really sloppy messes are the tourists. The locals are generally in good shape and look healthy. In fact I’ve been all over the world and U.K. women are definitely in the worst shape out of everywhere I’ve seen. Tourists visiting England must be shocked out how shoddy they all are.

There are many problems, you have to fight some on your own.

My children eat well, we limit junk and upf as best we can.

Same with screen time and what is viewed. We don't allow tiktok nor YouTube shorts, we encourage craft videos and creative media.

We as a family tidy our immediate area, sweep the road and trim the weeds outside our house, we pick up litter and don't drop it.

I relentlessly complain to the council, fill in online reports and notify of problems. The councils need a rocket up their arses. And to do what they have already been paid to do.

We try to do it right.

I'm sure we fail in some ways but hopefully make up for it in others.

I think one of the biggest problems in this country is lazy people having an inflated sense of entitlement and importance.

Its been going on so long now that these people are in employment and continue to do the minimum and expect maximum rewards, the civil service is attractive to these leeches so they flock there and congregate.

You're right but a lot of us are unaware of these issues - you clearly are and are doing something about it - on the other hand - this poster

doesn't want to know and prefers to stick their head in the sand which is their prerogative.

Some issues seem to be talked to death - to the point we switch off whereas other stuff is ignored.

Money being invested in simple long term stuff like benches, decent street furniture etc

Simple stuff that lasts a lifetime and actually costs pence a month if invested in properly

In the good ol days everything was an investment in the future now it’s how can we cut everything to spend money on lanyards and rainbows on the pavement that last 6 months

The last line is probably very much a waste of your time and angst, the council have no money, through waste and funding cuts, particularly in cities.

Tidy town competetions were designed to get places kept tidy with no or little cost to the council biglaugh

Been walking past a fridge freezer dumped in the street, with a council collection reference number written on it, for over a week now, they put the complaints and collection services in place, but pay lip service to them.

Most footpaths around here are overgrown with greenery, weeds are a foot tall in the cracks, benches are replaced with rather stupid " Art installations " in the park, which cause the lazy council workers to drive around in the 3.5 tonne trucks, breaking footpath edges and causing deep ruts into the grass areas.

Litter, sometimes get picked, my Close never did, I complained to the council, they replied " You are not on our street plan "biglaugh built mid 80,s.

Litter only gets picked if it is on the pavement, the overgrown greenery is full of it. when they cut the grass, they just shred the litter on the grass.

Given up making complaints of any sort to the council, they act on zero, thirld world Britain here we come biglaugh

There’s a limit to what we can consider. Poor, poor, donkeys cry etc

There’s so many topics already discussed but you want a new thread to find even more? Good luck spending the rest of your days wasting pixels on a motoring forum…

The government being soo caught up in health by creating the sugar tax, has led to companys replacing it with sweatners like aspartame and sucralose

( Im sure in 20 years time, they will be found to be worse than sugar )

In some venues its hard to find a soft drink without them! So its water for me or if not driving, several pints of beer ( spose its not all bad wink )

My kids school has so many visits from numerous departments of women with flash lanyards and free canvas bags

However when you actually read the leaflets it’s a nothing service

There are hundreds of these daft departments in each council

If you want to swing or fence repairing in the park it’s a several year wait.

My kids are at school now and the baby swing has been broken since they were born

Don’t get me started on dentist or cancer treatment in a sensible time frame

Someone we know had worked bloody hard all their life, need a knee op, no chance

Head down the hospital and there millions of leaflets in every language under the sun telling me there is help there for everything, except for things your actually need

Just out of curiosity I checked the stats. The UK does seem to top the leagues for fatties, but Croatia isn't far behind, both around 20% obese by population.

I am currently on holiday in rural Spain (very few non-Spanish here) and fat. Trust me, the locals are giving the Brits a good run for there money in the obesity stakes, both sexes.

I find all our news incredibly insular. We get bugger all on conflict in the Sahel, Sudan, Yemen, Myanmar. You practically have to have a nuclear accident to hear about anything from inside Japan, or a bat virus modified in a lab that spreads worldwide to hear about anything in China. Even on the US there's little other than Trump bad, Kamala good.

And it's only ever negative, only ever scratching the surface. On that happy note, I think I could do with a drink.

It’s one reason I listen to “The Rest is Politics”, because both presenters have a genuine interest in (and are very knowledgeable about) world affairs. They regularly get questions on almost all the current or upcoming elections in every part of the world, they cover the current regimes wherever they are making news, and they also give some coverage to conflicts that most of the news channels simply don’t bother with, including all the ones you’ve mentioned.

If you’re of a fairly stringent “right-wing” mindset then it’ll probably annoy the hell out of you; in particular Alistair Campbells view on private schooling would send most of the posters on that private school VAT whinge-fest thread into a purple rage, but I think it’s great and most of all, it brings to attention a lot of things going on around the world. Things which you rarely get much coverage on ITV, BBC Sky etc (although to be fair Al-Jazeera do make efforts to cover a lot more if you watch their news programs)

I cast my net fairly wide so I do consume some Al Jazeera and some of The Rest is Politics, but, yes, Campbell's a prick of the highest order and often difficult to listen to. I'm not a massive Stewart fan either but there's some value in listening to him.

This is because it is all swallowed up by increasing social care costs, a huge proportion of council tax goes on that. There is a point here though about the UK's crumbling infrastructure and lack of investment. For example most other places I've visited have much much better roads and/or public transport that just works. Our public transport is diabolical and the knackered roads are gridlocked. There is very little investment in anything these days, and planned projects are being canned - there isn't much discussion about that and the future of the country.
