This seems especially relevant right now given the amount of misinformation that has arguably triggered and fanned the flames of the recent riots - not to mention the rise of online conspiracy theories and outright lies and the way they target children and the vulnerable.

UK children to be taught how to spot extremist content and fake news online

Schools to wage war on ‘putrid’ fake news in anti-extremism crackdown

What about the fake news peddled by mainstream media and government?

If it's fake it's fake, I guess.

Rather than taught X is fake Y is real better to teach critical thinking much harder to see the results of course.

You yourself must accept that in the world of PH you have a clear left bias (this is think is healthy for ph to prevent it being an scho chamber). So if you were to say X is fake Y is real it would have a slant. I fear that is what might happen. I recall early 90s history class we were told to question evidence was it primary secondary was it written in a way that led you or asked you to think.

Excellent.

The state and our totally impartial and highly effective education system will do a phenomenal job.

Please govern me harder.

I can't see this being abused at all, nope, absolutely zero chance of this being abused at all.

Just like in Russia, you can only believe what the State news tells you, and they never lie, ever.

Oh in the world of PH I found out the other days I'm "ultra left wing" which was news to me hehe

I actually agree critical thinking is the key skill and it's what the substance behind the headlines points at - but you can already see how apparently we're turning into Russia - I'm guessing give it an hour for North Korea to come up.

Always used to be taught as part of history - consider the source, and all that. But it’s a good idea, and I assume (naturally I’ve not read the links posted biggrin) that this is for younger kids before they get into GCSEs where they might learn about it as part of taking history, and/or to cover for the people who don’t take a history lesson.

Did you know that the first line of the Guardian article says that's the exact point of the teaching?

I'm a great believer in children being taught to challenge, to analyse, to critique and to form opinions that they can debate, defend and - if necessary - adapt.

I'm less keen on the idea of children being taught by rote what is acceptable and what is not

I'd suggest that you have already applied your own personal bias to the story. smile
