I know it has been mentioned in a thread somewhere that flights people are taking are full etc (couldn't find it) but heard this report on the news earlier today...

Thought it odd considering people on here saying fights were full

Maybe there's less flights?https://www.standard.co.uk/business/business-news/...

That article is lacking context on most of the stats it quotes, but "A quarter (25%) of respondents said they will not be going on holiday abroad this year because of increased costs" suggests that 75% of respondents are going abroad this year? Which is still a lot of people flying.

Flight numbers are up. Getting very close to pre Covid levels. That article is lacking context on most of the stats it quotes, but "A quarter (25%) of respondents said they will not be going on holiday abroad this year because of increased costs" suggests that 75% of respondents are going abroad this year? They probably sacrifice something else like eat out a lot less or skip a service on their car...
YupA lot of people that we know are struggling, mostly younger folk with kids
My sister will not service the car, run with iffy brakes, bald tyres and not service the boiler etc, that’s boring stuff
Can always muster a holiday fund
Reads more like a promo piece for train companies based on a relatively small sample size (2003 adults) survey funded by a train operator.
“ The survey was conducted by research company Censuswide between July 19 and 23” - were they standing outside a train station while operating this survey ?

On the post-school break flights I have been on in July and August, between the UK and Spain some of the prices have been the same as last year (top dollar) but the planes have been half empty.https://www.standard.co.uk/business/business-news/...

Ryanair did send out comms to the market saying it was struggling to fill seats and if you look at the last two weeks of August for Ryanair the flights were on a 50%+ discount.
Could also be that people are using other methods to go to Europe...
We only flew on one of our last 5 holidays to mainland Europe - that was to Geneva.
The rest used the Eurostar - 2 to Lille, 2 to Paris (and one of those onwards to Switzerland by train).
It's so much easier - only have to arrive 40 minutes before departure, security is far quicker and you tend to arrive in the heart of a city, not a few miles out at the airport. The journey from Paris to Geneva was less than 5 hours, so overall, not much different to flying.
Also considered using the ferry from Harwich to the Hook, then picking up the hire car, but had to scrap that as I've knackered my knee...

Nail on the head. I can’t believe people soak this nonsense up. “ The survey was conducted by research company Censuswide between July 19 and 23” - were they standing outside a train station while operating this survey ?
Tiny survey commissioned by a (incompetent) UK rail company who go on to advertise tickets priced at £10.20 (which are probably nigh on impossible to get) to the drab, drizzly Lake District.

Depends on destination too…
We have been away in Cornwall for a week this year, 8 days in Europe and then 2 weeks in the Maldives.
Europe and the Maldives involved flights, but they’re not equal!
The split of volume by long/short haul might be interesting.
I bet the week in Cornwall was the most expensive of all three We have been away in Cornwall for a week this year, 8 days in Europe and then 2 weeks in the Maldives.

Quite, users of a Northern rail service are hardly going to be representative of the general population. Tiny survey commissioned by a (incompetent) UK rail company who go on to advertise tickets priced at £10.20 (which are probably nigh on impossible to get) to the drab, drizzly Lake District.

2 weeks in the Maldives at £10k isn't so bad, 2 weeks for £10k on a Greek island or Turkey seems insane to me. There isn't quite the gap for a cheap euro week compared to long haul.We have been away in Cornwall for a week this year, 8 days in Europe and then 2 weeks in the Maldives.

The cost of the flight is one element of the holiday but there is accommodation, eating out and entertainment. That can be cheaper abroad (depending on where you go). It isn’t as if you don’t get stiffed if you holiday in the UK during the school holidays.
Yeah you end up getting reamed here as well. A lot of places are very definitely a poor value in the UK, even if the weather turns out nice. Sometimes I just think to stay at home for 2 weeks! At least you can sleep in your own bed!JimmyConwayNW said:
