I wonder if Government response to the current difficulties will turn into a knee-jerk over reaction.

If so, what the unintended consequences of those will be.

I'm hoping that we'll just see current legislation used to quel the violence but I sense SKS feels a need to be seen to be doing something different.

“Never waste a crisis”

For those of a certain mindset, almost anything can be an opportunity to do what they already wanted to do.

He'll get criticised by some whatever he does. He's already been criticised on here for only putting up pink lights. Now the suggestion is he'll do too much.

It'll be the fault of Russia/social media/far right etc. 24/7 courts & stiff sentencing.
Then we'll have another round of violence in 10 years or so.

I remember reading in a political memoir (might have been Cameron's) that big ticket topics remain in the public conscience for a maximum of 11 weeks. There are a few exceptions but this, I feel, typically holds true. All governments use this to kick cans down the road until something else comes along to change the narrative. That is not to say that they ignore the problem, but the aim is to avoid the pressure of making knee jerk reactions at the expense of proper and considered decisions that require more time than we might like them to have.

Judgement on effect of policy can only be made in the distant future rather than the here and now.

This. But also Never waste a crisis as above.

I'm thinking some more creeping anti-terror powers and the police pre-empting things more in future by detaining the rioting type.

Maybe like the Football (Disorder) Act 2000 but for petty criminals.

Could also be more control of social media with Elon getting involved……

We've a bunch of unwanted XL Bully dogs who love a bit of violence, we also have a bunch of brain dead berks who likewise love a bit of violence and have suddenly found their voice.

Maybe they could get together, somewhere contained...

When the previous government dialled up the rhetoric to 11 and weaponised the entire immigration debate to suit their own ends, they have to take a share of the blame. Not all of it as there’s many, many reasons why it’s all kicking off but they did raise the temperature of the whole immigration problem.

Sorry about that.

I was outside my caravan on the campsite in France. And it was 38°C

Elon is already involved. He stokes the division by openly supporting Trump and then directly responding to SKS on X. He clearly sees the engagement spike when there is so much division in society, and X helps those with division continue to spread it. So Elon stirs the pot a bit more. But he's an autistic, psychopath so that's to be expected.

Whats ironic is that some of the laws used against these "protestors" may have been brought in to tackle the pro palestinian protests (tory govt giving police more powers), or the likes of Just Stop Oil. Didn't hear anyone complaining about them then.
