It appears to be a Caster Semenya type issue.

Yes

But still creates a risk for women expected to have a fight against someone with far higher levels of testosterone.

Except they didn’t fail any testosterone test for the Olympics? Do you know what their testosterone level is compared to the other female boxers because I haven’t seen that published anywhere?

I think I have been pretty consistent that I don’t think transgender women should compete against cis women in professional sport - but this isn’t that.

If we want to stop cis gendered people with a genetic advantage competing in professional sport I think we, basically, give up the notion of professional sport.

When Rufus said it was a Caster Semenya situation it is exactly that. The boxer in question has XY chromosomes, hence the higher levels of testosterone.

They have been banned from boxing against women by the IBA. The IOC think it is still a great idea to let it happen though.

Didn’t seem to be an issue in the last olympics when they competed.

Some of the comments surrounding this on SM and ither places is terrible IMO, but what it has done is given those who are just calling her a man a bit of a dilemma.

Thought Men couldn’t have vaginas and Women have penises?

Shouldn't be competing in the women's category then.

I think there’s an awful lot of ignorance out there and an awful lot of misinformation, I include myself in that and struggle to fully understand the issue. I believe she’s a biological woman who can give birth, there’s obviously something different about her endocrine system but that doesn’t make her a man.

I guess one clue is that transgender people are imprisoned in Algeria, but where does sport go with this?

There’s actually been no confirmed results that she has xy chromosomes either.

It’s funny how some of the vocal ‘gender critical ’ crowd in the media and SM don’t realise they are undermining their while argument by just shouting ‘its a man’.

The way it’s being presented in the media is that she has suddenly decided to compete against women snd she is dominating women’s boxing.

Which isn’t true.

Where did it go in 2020 when she competed?

The statement doesn't specify

https://www.iba.sport/news/statement-made-by-the-i...

But I think the president separately made a comment?

In any case it does not undermine anything. The point is that male characteristics give someone an advantage over females in sport. That can be having been born male, or the very small numbers of intersex people.

JK Rowling is being her usual hateful self over this, seemingly oblivious to a lot of the facts and how they contradict her normal gender critical arguments.

For 99.xx% of athletes there’s no issue but when occasional cases like this crop up, it can be very difficult to decide where to draw the line. Each governing body has to choose appropriate criteria for their sport.

I think most that have broad agreement that trans women who went through male puberty and have retained a physical advantage can’t compete at elite level, and for those with intersex characteristics that confer an advantage the same should apply.

That doesn’t mean that the athletes affected have done anything wrong or are in any way cheating, and definitely shouldn’t be subject to abuse and hatred.

It does kind of undermine the ‘can a woman have a penis’ gotcha line theyve been shouting doesn’t it.

From how I understand it the thread title is wrong.

So not exactly off to the best start.
