I was reading police solve no bulglaries in half of the country.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/03/police...

I have also seen many stories of people having cycle bikes stolen by people in balaclavas and sometimes armed with knifes. In the countryside as well.

In America any crime with a weapon is escalated massively yet in this country it feels like if you have anything nice you have no recourse and could lose your life as well.

There’s control?

Where I live, things like dangerous driving, anti social behaviour, even theft and burglary (including car theft) has been decriminalised a long time ago.

The only thing the police do is arrest people for calling them a lesbian nanna.

You’re suggesting the risk of harm from crime is higher here than in America?

And on that basis, you want us to take your view seriously?

There does seem to be an increase in brazen shoplifting as some of the recent videos doing the rounds show.

People going into shops and just loading up with booze and food with security just standing there watching them.

Saw one the other week which was taken in Wanstead, two young skinny kids robbing a place with security doing nothing but a member of the public trying to keep hold of one of them until the police turned up. Didn't manage to hold him though and he ran out past the security and into the road.

A big bang as he was hit by a car and security heard saying "Call an ambulance".

Yeah, I'd say some crime is out of control now. Haven't got any answers to it though. frown

No.

Crime is down significantly in the western world since the 1990s (excluding fraud due to advancement of technology).

The perception of crime may well be entirely different due to modern communication.

I saw a video on social media a few weeks ago where I guy had witnessed someone walk into a Gregg's I think filled a carrier bag full of stuff and just walk out, security did nothing. Apparently as is such a minor crime the police don't attend so security see no value in stopping anyone, the guy who had witnessed it was questioning why should he abide by the law and pay for something then if there's no catch?

Youngest step son works in the local Greggs. They regularly get scroats walking in, helping themselves and walking straight back out. The police will apparently only investigate if the theft is above £200 so the scroats know they can get away with it.

Lack of family values and lack of common decency. The stereotype is that it’s the same demographics. Normally people that don’t have to worry about paying rent or to even seek/do honest days work.

For all the unemployed in the world, claiming benefits and even trying to contribute. Instead of any custody put them litter packing, etc in their communities.

But no… they have rights. It’s disgusting really

Shoplifting (according to ONS data) is the highest it’s ever been in the last 20 years.

Police recorded data is only so reliable. Even so I can imagine shop theft is high at the moment.

It'll usually follow economic conditions to some degree.

Big picture I mean this:

How much did the previous government very publicly steal off us as that’ll probably give us an idea of what behaviour others then consider acceptable?

For a start the police need to be clamping down on this kind of tautological nonsense.

Shoplifting has been consistently under reported and under recorded for many years now - so its difficult to get any accurate figures

Security guards are just there for a visual deterrent.

No way will he risk his life for a minimum wage and for some sausage rolls.

My friend is a dispatcher for police calls in Manchester and says their policy is they never go out for shoplifting now

The fact we now talk about people risking their lives over the theft of some sausage rolls is enough to show how out of control some crime is and how used we are to the danger of it now. frown

Police are a bit corrupt where I live.

See my wallet for my offical driving licence - mine for £20.

However we had an attempted bag snatching near us last month. Made the news. Police sent extra patrols. Police Head of area gave out a statement saying not to worry we will increase police presence.

Any theft like this - on in like a ton of bricks, as are local security.

Tourists from other countries do shoplift here not realising it is a serious business. You will be arrested, fined and you will be deported.

Typically if you are caught in a shop you need to pay 4x the amount or owners will call the police.

Shoplifting, dine and dash….CCTV images go round the different social/WhatsApp groups really quickly.

Check out this dhead. Arrested at his hotel the next day.
