Not assuming anything here but I think a lot of bikers thinking they cant do anyone in a car any harm, and obviously the burden of risk if with those without a metal box round them but its still a 200 kilo machine that is capable of high speeds with a person on top, can still cause a lot of damage.
Absolutely horrific.
I’m a mile away or so from this and my heart sank when I read the story - it’s really made me think this morning and I felt absolutely gutted. Terrible incident for all involved. Absolutely horrific.
It is, however, an odd place to crash as the road is relatively wide and straight at that point. Shouldn’t speculate, I know, but in the area there’s a worrying number of tracksuit wearing (rather than leathers) young lads on L plated motorbikes flying around doing all manner of silly things; I was passed in a 30 the other day like I was standing still.
It did make me wonder, though. In a head on collision between a bike and car, would an SUV potentially come off worse because of the increased risk of the rider coming through the windscreen?

One photo I saw made it look as if it had happened around a blind crest. Maybe the bike doing a big speed multi-car overtake and the Focus emerged from the dip in the road?It is, however, an odd place to crash as the road is relatively wide and straight at that point.
It certainly looked like the debris of the bike was spread over quite a large distance, can't help but think it was seriously travelling.
Whatever happened though it's as awful as it is horrific. Also feel sorry for anyone that had to witness or even worse deal with the aftermath

I've seen the aftermath of a head on between a bike and a VW Golf. Made a hell of a mess of the car. Biker was on the ground surrounded by paramedics a long way behind the car. Woman and baby were standing by the car. Don't know what the outcome was.
When I was about 16 I was about second on the scene of a crash where a car pulled out of a blind junction into the path of a motorbike. I think it was a VW Polo, the biker hit the B pillar and it bend completely inwards, and the driver had a broken pelvis or legs or something. The rider went over the top and landed quite some distance away, clearly died instantly due to the large amount of blood coming from their very damaged helmet. A friend arrived shortly after I did and attempted CPR, which was kinda fruitless but they were the type of person to give it a go.The coroner put a fair amount of blame on the rider for "excessive speed" because the police calculated the bike's speed at 76mph (in a 60 limit, now 40) although I doubt it would have been any different. The rider's widow mounted a short campaign against the inquest's result, including flying a small tethered blimp from their house in Cosham.

This was early on a Sunday morning on the road from Grasmere to Ambleside. Golf was in its own lane with the front completely stoved in on the approach to what was a left hand bend for the biker - looked like he had overcooked it, run wide, and gone straight into her.The coroner put a fair amount of blame on the rider for "excessive speed" because the police calculated the bike's speed at 76mph (in a 60 limit, now 40) although I doubt it would have been any different. The road where the six people died appears to be a 50 limit.

The local police forensics/collision investigation unit look to have taken the unit across the road from one of our factory buildings. The yard makes for some grim viewing in general but it has to be said cars with (what looks like) bike impact damage subjectively seem very over represented. The cars are also often surprisingly badly damaged themselves. It's pretty sobering.

It is, and previously dropped from a NSL. It’s quite a dangerous road despite being relatively straight, mainly because there are so many side roads. They even had a trial of those cat’s eyes that are self illuminating - they were quite cool but they got rid of them. But the bit where they crashed was one of the straightest, best sighted parts, despite the slight crest and bend that a previous poster mentioned.
You do often get stuck behind someone dawdling at 30mph and it is quite frustrating, it would be very possible that one of them was going for an overtake. I’ll definitely be going a bit slower down there from now on. Not that I drive stupidly or anything, but for some reason it’s a road that encourages you to drive quicker than you should, possibly through familiarity.
