As of now you can legally do home distilling in the US.

Home distilling has been legal in NZ for many years - 6kg of sugar, some yeast - few days to ferment, few hours to distill = 3 litres of pure alcohol. Water down with orange juice.

Perhaps there should be a law banning making coffee at home, as it interferes with tax collecting.
