"Reform UK under pressure to prove all its candidates were real people | Reform UK | The Guardian" https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/...
Apparently the person in the picture is real though.
ETA ignore the "alm" in the title.

The main evidence and the issue that the Twitterati can't seem to get over is to quote the Guardian "many of these people have no visible online presence" - shock horror, you mean there are actually people out there who don't feel the need to splash their whole lives over the internet - astonishing.

And as for not turning up for hustings, etc. - the whole point was just to get a candidate's name on a ballot so voters could demonstrate a level of support, with no expectation of winning other than in the few seats with Farage, etc. standing.

Mrs Hill’s father put his name forward to be a UKiP candidate for a previous city council election, because he went to a meeting once and they said they just needed names to put on the ballots, no other commitments or visibility. Unfortunately, after he died, if you googled his name and city his 1% of the council vote share was the first search result to show up, in front of his career achievements.

You have to deliver the nomination papers by hand either the candidate themselves, their agent or one of the two proposers who have to live in the constituency and be on the electoral register.

Dorset south candidate didn't exist, split the tory vote and helped labour win.

So it seems that voter id is important for voters but not candidates.

Reform are rotten.

Morgan Tara Young, who lives in a village in Derbyshire, is running in South Dorset against Richard Drax of the Conservatives, who first won the seat in 2010. She has never attended a hustings and when questioned by The Times made no secret of the fact that she was a “paper candidate”.
Do not see you complaining about other parties putting up candidates who live miles away from their constituencies.

It is common practice for parties to put up paper candidates in unwinnable seats, mainly because the Tories and Labour see themselves as offering everyone the opportunity to vote for them.

I have stood a couple of times for unwinnable council elections- not sure what I would have done had I been accidentally elected! Zero campaigning, and not much online presence in my real name.

This doesn't sound that different. They would be daft to take the risk of purely invented candidates - it would be bound to get out.

OK, it's Reform Perhaps they are that daft!

It's clear that the Labour vote didn't really increase vs 2019 and what happed is that the Tories were punished by their voters going LD or Reform. In 5 years time who knows they may just switch back.
