It's pleasing to note that they won't let us oiks get away with any shenanigans. Probably cost more in postage to notify the tax payer though.

They owe me £900 since January and still no sign of it.

I wrote to them to declare a mistake on my giftaid going back a few years, and they replied with a letter today telling me its too late to amend an SA (i know, I said it in my letter) and asking me to write, which I already had, as they were replying to my letter with a letter. More curiously, their letter said they were enclosing a copy of my letter, but there was nothing else in the envelope. I think they have simply given up.

Strangely they owe my business £3700. No sign of that.

Doesn't surprise me one bit, they are arse-wipes of the highest order IME.

Recently they 'amended' my tax code by doubling my income (if only) thereby increasing the amount of tax I pay. I tried to correct it online but no joy so I had to call them.

42 minutes on hold/wait until I got through at 35p/min (though I think/hope it's free on my mobile plan?) to tell them it was wrong and no answer as to why they suddenly decided I had doubled my income.

And it's not the first time they've done similar. Still, I suppose they've got to pay for Rishi's wish list somehow...

I got a letter, threatening dire consequences if I did not pay up.
For an underpayment of tax of

20p.

Yes, that is twenty pence.

Mrs D is owed £3k ish since January. Not a dicky bird. If I am 1 minute late with their ‘balancing payment’ arsery in July, they’ll be charging interest. Shower of s. I think that’s the phrase.

In my limited experience, if you call up they can be very human about this kind of thing when you speak to them.

I was told I owed them circa £10k because I failed to comply with a deadline. I was unable to find the deadline on their site. I phoned, got through, and the chap admitted they did not publish the deadline. Who do I appeal to? Them.

I was then told that the chap could see I did not owe the £10k, but would have to pay it. If I did not pay them within 12 days I would be charged interest and receive a fine for every day over. They would reimburse me within 6 weeks. I told my wife it would be 6 months. But they pulled out all the stops and I was allowed to have my money within 5.

£10k within two weeks. I had investments, but I would lose a considerable amount getting access to it. Went to my bank of over 20 years and asked for a short-term loan, no more than 6 months. When I told them what it was for they increased the rate I was charged. Nothing they could do about it evidently. There was something I could do, and that was tell them, after getting the loan, but only for a year, and I'd be penalised for finishing early, that I would cancel my account.

Wish I could do the same with HMRC. I now have accountants. Cost a bit, but at least I'm more confident.

They’ve owed me £11k since February last year which they promised they’d actioned in August last year….

Clearly I wasn’t allowed to offset that £11k they owe me against the tax bill I had in January. They are such utter s. It is totally deliberate.
When my accountant speaks to them to query something the standard response is “we need a letter to action it” which they then either lose or ignore….

After the global financial crisis of 2007/8 my company’s turnover dropped by @25% and ebit by a similar amount, we supplied services to the financial sector. They wrote to my auditors and asked them to explain what had happened to the business, I guess it was all driven by some automated trigger system, but it summed up the futility of trying to interact on a meaningful level.

If you ever have the misfortune of meeting directly with a tax inspector you’ll know that they’re a different breed, very different.

They sent us £2219 last June, same time as an expected CIS refund. Our bank did query it as it had a ref number issue that they spotted but as we've had no communication from HMRC it's sitting on the accounts, I'm sure the accountant recorded it as a creditor or credit falling due? anyway they don't seem to fussed for it back.

I know you should avoid clichés like the plague, especially those past their sell-by date, but HMRC epitomises Kafkaesque. You are passed from one person to another until you are told that they’ll put you back to the switchboard. Screams of ‘No!’ are ignored.

Terrible idea. They will lose 17 of them and charge you a huge penalty for underpayment of 17p.

I wouldn't have a clue how to get a chequebook.

They owe me £400 from last year's self assessment which I've requested 6 times and has never been paid.

Very true. I did my online Self Assessment and they said there would be some tax due. Just received a Statement, expecting it to show tax due by 31 July but it says there's tax already overdue and with interest running. Strange they didn't get around to mentioning that a month ago in the Self Assessment calculation.

The harsh reality is UK's tax system is now so complicated nobody at HMRC actually understands it. All they have are low paid clerical staff who trot out "computer says".

The comedy of watching PAYE trying to deal with multiple sources of income is enough to make you laugh or cry, according to taste.
