Maybe this it what it would have looked like if someone had killed Hitler in 1936.

Fico was forced to step down as prime minister following the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak in 2018.

"If Smer enters government, we will not send a single round of ammunition to Ukraine," Fico told supporters during his campaign.

This, as well as his pledge to resist Western sanctions on Russia, caused some onlookers to compare Fico to Hungary's populist right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

"Fico won a third term as Slovakian prime minister last October after running a campaign that criticized western support for Ukraine. Fico had pledged an immediate end to Slovak military support for Ukraine and promised to block Ukraine’s NATO ambitions in what would upend Slovakia’s staunch backing for Ukraine.
Ahead of the election, Fico made no secret of his sympathies towards the Kremlin and blamed “Ukrainian Nazis and fascists” for provoking Vladimir Putin into launching the invasion, repeating the false narrative Russia’s president has used to justify his invasion."

If he's pro Russia, why would Putin do this?

Exactly, this will either be a left wing or Ukrainian supporter.

Viktor Orbán should step up his security after this.

Maskirovka?

"Strategic maskirovka is carried out at national and theater levels to mislead the enemy as to political and military capabilities, intentions and timing of actions. In these spheres, as war is but an extension of politics, it includes political, economic and diplomatic measures as well as military."

Depends really. He might be tucking into a nice fresh steak with a side of Foie Gras or he might be not so gently stood on. Fico is highly divisive.

Slovakia is a NATO member so assassinating the PM and making it look like it was a Ukrainian hit could cause division in NATO about continuing to support Ukraine.

I'm not saying this is what has happened. Just giving a reason why Putin might try something like that.

The attempt on his life was made by a chap who's 71 and appears to be a writer.

Or it could equally be someone upset by something else entirely, some domestic issue, or something else unrelated to Ukraine. Or just an attention seeking tw@, or mental illness, or, or, or...by the way, Fico is a left-wing politician from a left-wing party, although also nationalist in nature too. He can't be put in a traditional pigeon hole.

What I'm saying is let's not speculate, it doesn't help.

I'd say Nationalists who are socialists is a well trodden path.

I'd say the ones you're talking about were named incredibly poorly as there was essentially nothing nothing Socialist about them. Common misconception, that is.
