250,000 people affected,

Best line from the DM, "The MoD are said to be hopeful that serving personnel will not be concerned about their safety".
I'll bet they're hopeful there won't be a massive class action kicking the arses of all responsible for inadequate security. I suspect they'll be disappointed.

Just having a peek at the website of the payroll system provider:
"New platforms, modern processes and increased accessibility.
Following a successful service transfer in 2020, we assured the ongoing delivery of excellent Business As Usual (BAU) services. We are currently focused on delivering transformation and value adding technology, providing new platforms and more modern methods of working.
We’re introducing digital access to services such as pensions and compensation. These will hugely enhance the user experience and better enable self-service. We’re also working to deliver smartphone-accessible web pages to enable users to connect to services more directly including via an enhanced Veterans Portal.
We operate a wholly safe and secure service with all records and we’re data protected to the highest levels."
Meanwhile in a office in Beijing - 'sounds like a challenge we are prepared to accept...'
I'd suspect there are a few interesting conversations underway with the other public sector bodies that SSCL serve...

News saying it was a Chinese hack that is in my mind, fairly serious act of aggression but a) what can we do b) do we likely do the same
The sooner we wise up and roll back on Cameron's China, the better. It was only ever a golden era for the anti-fragiles like him that had theiir hands in the till.Pretty clear the message is understood now, but policy needs to move to reflect this:

Not least, we need to look very carefully at any key reliance on the nation for any supply in future.

Got my letter yesterday, I've got the full house of name, bank details and home address. I do get 12 months of equifax though!
Phoned my bank and they have put a note on my file.
What are the likely consequences of the breach? And should I be doing anything proactive?
SD.

But be aware even opening a new savings account may trigger a requirement to submit id docs.
