A Vietnamese buisiness woman has been senctenced to death for fraud totaling $44 billion.

Setting aside the death penalty issue for fraud, I'm surprised such a level of fraud could take place in a communist, and therefore presumably stringently regulated, system.
I suppose it just shows that whether Communist or Capitalist, fraud & bribery to facilitate it occur just the same.

She wasn't on the list of people allowed to commit fraud in the communist state, I suspect that is the issue.

I suspect it is the opposite of that- she was on the list - for a long time, and now isn't...

Reminds me of the scene from the film "The Death of Stalin".

Vietnam is not communist, it has not been since 1986/7 Đổi Mới ((means renovation (ish)) was introduced as people were starving and many in the south were on the verge of revolt, at the time GDP per capita was about $250 (uk was about $11,000,) inflation was in the hundreds of %.

They have been a largely market/ private ownership economy since 1987ish, certainly since early 90s after the fall of the ussr. During real communism millions fled the horrific regime, we forget how horrible the Vietnamese communist party was, these are people who used crucifixion of innocent civilians to further political goals.

Its maybe a socialist government, perhaps. It follows the usual socialist/ marxist model of massive corruption and elevation by who you know, how well you tow the line. My Xs family own a factory making components for trainers! To open a new factory payments need to be made to officials, agreements made to employ the right relatives of people etc etc etc. They used to check how good a party member you are to get medical treatment! If you were a trouble maker, no chance.

It is such a shame as Vietnam is the most beautiful country with the most amazing people and culture.

Not sure there has ever been an actual Communist country. Lots of Socialist dictatorships though.
