There have been a load of grumpy "anti woke" candidates standing for election at the last couple of AGMs. I don't think the membership has elected any of them.

Nice that the DT has included both sides to the story including a quote from Keir Starmer “In its desperation to cling onto power, at all costs, the Tory party is trying to find woke agendas in the very civic institutions they once regarded with respect.”

As the story says, the NT have made scones without butter for years. One (minor) side effect of our utterly hopeless Government is the distraction to stuff like this.

National Trust secretly makes all its scones vegan - while critics condemn 'woke' use of vegetable-based spread instead of butter

It isn't an April Fools they're actually angry about it.

You are right. We rejected the lot of them! The NT is one of the few institutions that we can still be jolly proud of in broken Britain.

Can see why they do to simplify their catering, but if they are crap, I can see why non vegans wont want them, why would you buy something you dont enjoy eating ?

But, wonder how many have eaten them and not noticed ?

We had a couple yesterday and very nice they were too, the special simnel one was especially delicious. Just about to tuck into a piece of their simnel cake I bought home too. Yummy...

Most likely nothing to do with veganism and everything to do with cost cutting. Sounds grim. Scones are mainly flour, butter, eggs and milk with a bit of sugar:

You can’t make vegan scones. You can bake something else without butter eggs and milk but it isn’t a scone.

Given the minimal 1940's butter and egg ration, I suspect wartime scones didn't have much of those in them either - more likely margarine.
